Mountie men drop 86-70 decision at Mercyhurst
Charles Becoats scored a career-high 22 points and Chuck Harper added 21 points, but it wouldn't be enough as Mansfield dropped a 86-70 decision at Mercyhurst in a PSAC crossover contest Friday night.
Becoats 3-point shooting keep Mansfield in the game for much of the first half with the Mountaineers trailing just 32-30 after Joe Bell hit a pair of free throws with just under five minutes remaining before halftime.
Mercyhurst (8-4, 4-2 PSAC) would use its inside game to close out the half on a 15-7 run to take a 47-35 lead into the locker room.
Mansfield cut the gap to 49-39 on a jumper by freshman Taijay Williams early in the second half but could pull no closer in falling to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in PSAC play.
Becoats hit a career-best six 3-pointers in the game while Harper scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half. Onyema Utti added 10 points for Mansfield. Joe Bell, the PSAC East Player of the Week, scored a season-low five points and went 0-8 from the floor. It marked the first time in his 35-game collegiate career that Bell has not hit at least one field goal in a game while also snapping a 26-game streak of scoring in double figures.
Senior Luis Leao scored a game-high 25 points for Mercyhurst with Jonathan Ouegnin recording a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The Mountaineers travel across town to Gannon for a Saturday night game.
