Mounties announce 2014 baseball recruiting class
Head coach Harry Hillson has announced the addition of 13 student-athletes to the Mansfield University baseball program for the 2014 season.
Hillson enters his 28th season at the helm of the program where he has guided the Mountaineers to three NCAA World Series appearances, four PSAC tournament championship titles and nine PSAC Eastern Division crowns.
"Overall this class is a good mix. We have some transfers that can step in immediately and help us out and this is an extremely talented group of freshman. I expect a lot of these freshman to contend for playing time this year"
Eric Schanzanbacher - 3B (Greencastle, Pa./ Hagerstown C.C.)
Transfer from Hagerstown Community College where he hit .387 with 19 doubles, 32 RBI and had 22 stolen bases. Expected to step in and hit middle of the order.
"Great offensive player who can hit in the middle of the order and drive in runs for us and improves us defensively"
Westyn Baylor - OF/ RHP (Bangor, Pa./Radford)
Transfer from Radford where he had 26 at bats and pitched six Innings. Batted .414 with 10 home runs in his senior year of high school. Career home run record at Bangor High School. Will play a big role in the middle of the order for the Mountaineers.
"Wes has tremendous power and he and Eric add an element to our offense that we have not had the past couple years. He is also going to be counted on to pitch some innings as well"
Zach Saccoman - RHP (New Cumberland, Pa./ Frederick C.C.)
Transfer from Frederick Community College. Went 4-1 with an ERA of 2.28 in 43 innings pitched last season.
Matt Engler - LHP (Deerfield, N.Y./Mohawk Valley C.C.)
Transfer from Mohawk Valley Community College. Posted a 5-0 record with an ERA of 2.00 last season with 47 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched. Went 7-1 with a 2.57 ERA and struck out 45 in 42 Innings pitched as a freshman at Onandaga Community College. Expected to compete for a starting spot in 2014.
Chas Parsons - RHP (Barneveld, N.Y./Mohawk Valley C.C.)
3-1 with an ERA of 3.30 in his sophomore season at Mohawk Valley Community College. Finished his freshman season with a 7-1 record and 0.81 ERA. Pitched for the Adirondack Trailblazers of the Perfect Game Baseball League this summer where he posted an ERA of 3.99 in 49.2 innings.
Zephyn Kash - 1B (Homer, N.Y./Mohawk Valley C.C.)
Hit .363 with 29 RBI, 13 doubles and three home runs this past season at Mohawk Valley Community College. Batted .323 with 23 RBI and a home run as a freshman. Expected to come in and compete for a spot at first base or designated hitter this year.
Brandon Garrett - RHP (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury)
Graduated from Pennsbury High School where he was named to the Bucks County Courier Times Golden team as a shortstop and pitcher. Went 5-4 with a 1.91 ERA as a senior with 58 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched. Expected to log significant innings as a freshman.
Taylor Hillson - SS/C (Mansfield, Pa./Mansfield)
Named 2013 NTL player of the year. Hit .467 as a senior with 12 doubles, 20 RBI and 15 Stolen Bases. Played for the Elmira Pioneers of the Perfect Game Baseball League this past summer where he hit .268.
Hunter Huyett - 1B/3B (Lawrenceville, Pa./Williamson)
Hit .500 as a senior at Williamson high school with 21 RBI and three home runs. Shows tremendous upside coming into the 2014 season.
Troy Wilson - 2B/SS (Binghamton, N.Y./Vestal)
Hit .375 with two home runs and 16 RBI as a senior for Vestal High School. Primary position is at shortstop but will most likely transition to second base for the Mounties
Owen Lukens - IF (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport)
Hit .436 as a senior at Williamsport high school. Versatile athlete with a strong arm that can play second base, shortstop or third base
Marshal Kiessling - OF/ RHP (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin)
Led Lower Dauphin to Pennsylvania State Championship game where he was the starting pitcher. Has a nice Left handed swing and played a variety of positions in high school. Will most likely start off in the outfield.
Eric Harms - OF (Hamburg, Germany)
Brother of current MU pitcher Danny Harms. Athletic OF who has swung the bat very well this fall.
