Mounties split with West Chester
Senior Joe Candelmo threw a six-hit complete game in the opener to lead Mansfield to a split with West Chester in a PSAC East doubleheader at Shaute Field Saturday afternoon.
West Chester rallied to win the nightcap 5-4 scoring a run in the top of the seventh and holding off the Mountaineers with two runners on and one out in the bottom of the inning.
In the opener, Mansfield staked Candelmo to a 5-0 lead after the first three innings of play. The Mountaineers scored twice in the first when Joey Andrews drove a two-run home run over the right field fence.
Mansfield got three more runs in the third with Andrews driving in the first run with a bases-loaded single followed by a bases-loaded walk to Jon Taddeo.
West Chester closed the gap to 5-2 with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth before Mansfield put the game away with three runs in the sixth.
Candelmo scattered six hits over seven innings while strikeout six and walking none to pick up his second win in four decisions on the season. He allowed just one earned run.
Dylan Woodworth went 3-3 while Andrews was 2-3 with a home run and three RBI's to lead the offense.
Greg McCuch went the first five innings to take the loss for West Chester. Justin Lamborn hit a home run for the Golden Rams only RBI of the game.
In the nightcap, Mansfield took a 1-0 lead in the second on a sac fly by Matt Fisher.
West Chester (16-9, 7-1 PSAC East) answered with four runs in the top of the third off five hits and a Mansfield error to take a 4-1 lead.
But the Mountaineers started chipping away at the lead in their next at-bat, scoring twice in the third off a double by Seth Tressler with Jon Taddeo plating the other run on a ground out to pull to 4-3.
Mansfield tied the game in the fifth when Andrews delivered a two-out RBI single to knot the game a 4-4.
Starter Joey Zuniga settled down after the four runs in the third, retiring six of the next eight batters he faced before being relieved in the top of the sixth by Jonathon Earnest who threw a hitless sixth.
In the top of the seventh, leadoff man Mike Raimo was hit by a pitch before Jack Provine doubled give West Chester runners at second and third and none out. The next batter ground out to first befoe Chris Pula lifted a run score sac fly to break the tie and take a 5-4 lead. Jeremy Mapston relieves Earnest and got the final out.
In the bottom of the seventh, Seth Tessler reached first on a one-out error and Brandon Miller walked giving Mansfield runners on first and second with one out but the Mountaineers couldn't push across the tying run.
Zuniga struck out eight over the first five innings with Earnest being saddled with the loss in relief.
Kyle Weary picked up the win in relief of starter Conor Kerins.
Mansfield (9-11, 1-7 PSAC East) will travel to IUP Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader.
