MU baseball swept at IUP
The Mansfield University baseball team scored early in both games, but IUP used late runs to sweep the Mounties in a PSAC interdivisional doubleheader at Dougherty Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Crimson Hawks improve to 16-13 overall while Mansfield falls to 12-17.
In the opener, both sides started the scoring early, recording a run in each half of the first two innings.
Dylan Woodworth drew a lead-off walk in the first inning before Seth Tressler and Brandon Miller loaded the bases with back-to-back singles. A Joey Andrews groundout was enough to bring home Woodworth and give Mansfield the first run of the game.
IUP tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Robbie Zinsmeister scored on a David McNeal sacrifice fly.
In the top of the second, the Mounties drew another lead-off walk, this time by junior Mitch Iseneker. Anothony Renz singled to put runners at first and second before a groundout advanced both runners into scoring position. A Stanton Tentnowski RBI groundout plated Iseneker to put Mansfield on top 2-1.
The Crimson Hawks pushed another run across in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly to tie the game once more.
After a scoreless third inning, IUP's offense exploded for three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to take a commanding 9-2 lead. The Hawk's McNeil hit his first home run of the season on a three-run shot over the left field fence in the fourth inning.
IUP's Matt Szukics earned the complete-game victory on the mound, scattering six hits and allowing two earned runs.
Nick Keener, who relieved starting pitcher Joey Andrews in the third inning, took the loss in 2.2 innings of work for Mansfield.
In the nightcap, IUP took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Zinsmeister scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a hit by pitch.
The Mountaineers answered in the top of the inning when Renz singled through the left side to bring home Matt Fisher. Fisher reached on an error by the shortstop and moved to third on an Iseneker double down the right field line.
The game was delayed for an hour and a half with one out in the top of the second inning due to rain.
Brandon Miller started off the third inning by reaching on a single then advancing to second base on an error by the right fielder. A pair of walks by Andrews and Fisher loaded the bases before Iseneker scored on a double play ball to put Mansfield on top 2-1.
In the bottom of the third, Zinsmeister belted a solo shot over the left field fence to knot the game at three runs apiece.
IUP went on to score four runs in the fifth to complete the sweep.
Demetrius Christofes earned the win on the mound for the Hawks, pitching 4.2 innings in relief of starting pitcher Austin Mock.
Quin Taylor was saddled with the loss for Mansfield.
The Mountaineers travel to Gannon on Friday for a PSAC interdivisional doubleheader, before hosting the Golden Knights at Shaute Field on Saturday.
