MU field hockey falls at Mercyhurst
Senior Kristyn Grunza (Nicholson/Lackawanna Trail) scored two of the Mountaineers' four goals on the day, but it wouldn't be enough as Mansfield fell on the road to Mercyhurst in PSAC West field hockey action Wednesday evening at Tullio Field.
Junior Brianna Velepec (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) put the Mounties up early with a goal in the 10th minute assisted by fellow junior Taryn Schawillie (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester). Velepec leads Mansfield (4-8, 0-5 PSAC West) in scoring with 10 goals and has recorded a score in eight of 12 games this season. Mercyhurst (4-8, 2-4 PSAC West) responded by scoring four unanswered goals, including a successful penalty swipe attempt, in a nine-minute span to take a 4-1 lead over the Mounties.
The first half scoring barrage wasn't over as Grunza and Lacey Croasdale (Nicholson/Lackawanna Trail) each found the back of goal for Mansfield with shots from the top of the circle. Grunza and Croasdale's scores cut Mansfield's deficit to just one goal leading into halftime.
In the second half, freshman Cayla Slade scored her second of the game to give the Lakers a 5-3 advantage with just under 20 minutes to play in the contest. Grunza recorded her second goal of the game and sixth of the season with an unassisted strike from the top of the circle in the 64th minute to pull within one of Mercyhust, but Mansfield would come up just short.
