MU field hockey picked ninth
The Mansfield University field hockey team was selected to finish ninth overall in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in voting conducted by conference coaches and released today.
Two-time defending National Champion West Chester was tabbed as the preseason favorite, receiving nine first place votes. Shippensburg was selected to finish second and received the remaining two first place votes.
Millersville, Bloomsburg and IUP round out the top five followed by East Stroudsburg, Slippery Rock, Mercyhurst and then Mansfield. Kutztown and PSAC newcomer Seton Hill complete the field.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 2012 season which was highlighted by a No. 9 national ranking early in the season and a stunning 4-2 upset of No. 3 Bloomsburg. Mansfield returns 17 players from last season's 6-12 team including seven starters.
Head coach Diane Monkiewicz enters her 16th season at the helm of the Mansfield program. During her tenure, Monkiewicz has guided the Mountaineers to a pair of PSAC playoff berths (2006, 2010) and an ECAC Championship in 2001.
Mansfield opens its season against Southern Connecticut State on Sept. 7 as part of the Jane Goss Memorial Tournament hosted by Shippensburg.
