MU men's basketball set to tip off
The Mansfield University men's basketball team will preview the 2012-13 season when the Mountaineers travel to Olean, N.Y. to face the reigning Atlantic 10 Champion St. Bonaventure Bonnies in a preseason basketball exhibition game.
The game will be broadcast live by Mansfield student radio station WNTE-89.5 with play-by-play chores handled by Brian Armstrong.
Fans outside the Mansfield area can follow the broadcast and live stats at GoMounties.com.
The season-opening exhibition game has become a tradition of sorts for the two programs. Last season St. Bonaventure came away with an 87-61 win that jump started an A10 Championship season leading to a bid to the NCAA Championship.
Mansfield returns six player who all saw action in at least 20 games last season including leading scorers sophomore Joe Bell and senior Chuck Harper.
Bell was named PSAC East Rookie of the Year last season after averaging 16.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Harper averaged 13.0 points per game while junior guard Cory Henneghan averaged 8.2 points per outing. Senior Charles Becoats averaged 8.0 points per game at guard and also ranked as one of the top long distance shooters in the PSAC connecting on 40% of his attempts beyond the arc.
Junior big man Kevonte McClain has looked impressive in the preseason after averaging 8.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per game last season.
An improved Mark Wilber also brings size inside after appearing in 21 games as a freshman last year.
Head coach Rich Miller, now in his eighth season at the helm, will also have a chance to get a close look at newcomers Kamil Parzych, Brad Williams, Brady Burke, Tremaine Bowman, Onyema Utti, Taijay Williams and Kenny Johnson.
Last season the Bonnies, led by A10 Player of the Year Andrew Nicholson, won their conference tournament crown before falling to Florida State 66-63 in the first round of the NCAA tournament in what would have been a monumental upset. Nicholson, who averaged 18.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, went on to be drafted by the Orlando Magic with the 19th overall pick of the 2012 NBA Draft.
Bonaventure returns 10 letter winners and three starters from last year's squad including second leading scorer Demitrius Conger who averaged 12.1 points and 6.2 boards an outing. Also returning to the starting lineup is Matthew Wright (7.6 ppg, 2.8 apg) and Charlon Kloof (6.4 ppg, 2.7 apg).
The Mountaineers host Gwynedd-Mercy in an exhibition contest on Monday, Nov. 5 before opening the regular season on the road at Roberts Wesleyan on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
