The Mansfield University baseball team is set to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern division play on Saturday, March 23 when the Mountaineers travel to Kutztown University for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Mansfield will host the Golden Bears in their home opener on Sunday at Shaute Field.

The Mounties are off to a 7-4 start after completing their annual Florida spring break trip on Tuesday. Mansfield dropped its opening game of the spring break trip to Ohio Valley before winning five straight. The Mountaineers fell in their last two outings at Saint Leo (Fla.) and Eckerd (Fla.) to finish 5-3 in the Sunshine State.

Three of Mansfield's four losses have come by just one run with the other loss coming by two runs. The Mounties have outscored opponents 89-40 in their first 11 games this season.

Senior catcher Conor Thompson is leading MU offensively, hitting .500 in 30 at bats with eight RBIs and six runs scored. Junior Brandon Miller has made starts in all 11 games at shortstop with a .429 clip and is second in the team in runs scored with 11.

Senior Joe Candelmo has made three starts on the mound with 19.0 innings under his belt. Candelmo currently holds a 1-1 record with a 3.32 ERA. The lefty has struck out a team-best 21 batters and has yet to issue a single walk on the season.

Kutztown enters the weekend series with a 9-4 overall record and has won its last three contests. The Bears are hitting .297 at the plate and hold a team ERA of 3.74.

KU's Brandon Martinez is hitting .487 with 10 RBIs and nine runs while Kyle Stoudt is batting .422 with nine RBIs and eight runs. The Bear's Jason Henderson holds a 2-1 record on the season with a 5.40 ERA over 15.0 innings pitched.
