MU soccer ties Clarion
Karyn Anselmo scored in the 40th minute to tie the game at one goal apiece in what would prove to be the final outcome despite playing two overtime periods Saturday afternoon as Mansfield played to a draw with PSAC foe Clarion.
The Mountaineers created plenty of scoring chances in the game with 10 corners and eight shots on goal.
The Golden Eagles were limited against a stingy Mansfield defense, being held to just three corners and three shots on goal.
Clarion (2-7-5, 2-6-3 PSAC) struck first in the 18th minute when Bethany Naugle dribbled past two defenders and found the back of the net from the right side of goal. Anselmo's game-tying goal came when she collected a saved shot by Kelsey Chapman in front of the net and played the ball past the Eagles' keeper. The goal was the freshman's third of the season.
Field hockey falls
Junior Taryn Schawillie scored her 42nd career goal to tie the score in the 19th minute, but top-ranked Shippensburg answered with four first half goals to beat Mansfield 7-2 in a PSAC West field hockey game Saturday afternoon.
The loss, coupled with a Mercyhurst win, ends any PSAC West playoff hope for Mansfield.
Schawillie's unassisted goal was her team-leading 14th of the season and the 42nd of her career placing her one behind MU career scoring leaders Gretchen Reschke (1999-02) and Kristi Swartz (1999-2002) who each scored a school-record 43 goals in their careers.
Mansfield got its other goal of the day off a penalty swipe by Tori Malatesta, giving he sophomore her first collegiate goal. Junior Kristie Rollman was credited with 20 saves for the Mountaineers.
