MU track and field jumps into regional rankings
The Mansfield University women's indoor track and field team jumped seven spots to No. 5 while the men's team moved up three spots to No. 10 in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic Region National Team Computer Rankings released by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
It marks the first time since the 2009 season that both the women's and men's teams have been ranked in the top 10 regionally.
The USTFCCCA National Computer Rankings are compiled by mathematical formulas based on national descending order lists. The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race.
Johnson C. Smith (N.C.) tops the women's regional rankings with 279.82 points followed by Slippery Rock (253.24), St. Augustine's (200.07) and Shippensburg (160.01). Mansfield is less than 10 points behind Shippensburg at 150.76 points.
East Stroudsburg, Winston-Salem State, Seton Hill, Kutztown and California (Pa.) round out the top 10.
Jessica Scordino and Lauren Norton top the region in the women's 3,000m with times of 10:01.81 and 10:03.78 respectively. Norton holds the best 5,000m time in the region at 17:01.39 followed by Scordino in 3rd at 17:10.45. Scordino also ranks second in the mile at 5:04.94.
The women's DMR team of Scordino, Norton, Michaela Lambert and Melissa Cruz are second in the region with a time of 12:13.75. Lambert ranks seventh in the 400m at 57.34.
The men's rankings are led by St. Augustine's at 468.60 points followed by Shippensburg (374.25), Slippery Rock (232.36), Lock Haven (229.53) and East Stroudsburg (158.16) to complete the top five. Virginia State (150.72) is ranked sixth then Virginia Union (126.19), Seton Hill (91.01), Kutztown (74.53) and Mansfield (73.94).
Senior Mike Robinson boasts the top mile time in the region at 4:07.41 and the second fastest 800m time at 1:52.90. The men's DMR team of Robinson, Jacob Portock, Joelsen Resimo and Bob McCoy own the second fastest time in the region at 10:14.09.
