MU track and field ready for PSAC Championships
The Mansfield University men's and women's track and field programs are set to take on the conference's top athletes this weekend at the 2013 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Millersville University.
The championships open with the men's decathlon on Thursday, May 9 and conclude on Saturday with the awards ceremony.
Sophomore Olivia Lopes enters PSACs with the fastest qualifying time in the 100m dash at 12.05 and the 200m dash at 24.76. At last year's conference meet in Bloomsburg, Lopes finished 3rd in the 100m and 5th in the 200m.
This season Lopes has set MU school records in the 100m, 200m and 400m events.
Also entering the field with the top preliminary time is senior Brenae Edwards in the 5,000m run with an NCAA provisional mark of 16:45.34. Edwards is a two-time All-American in the 5,000m with a fifth place finish at the NCAA Outdoor meet in 2010 and a seventh place finish in 2011.
Edwards will also compete in the 1,500m run where she holds the fourth fastest time in the conference at 4:40.58.
Jess Scordino will compete in both the 1,500m and 5,000m events as well. Scordino enters the championships with the fourth fastest time in the 5,000m at 16:59.42 and the ninth fastest time in the 1,500m at 4:44.50.
Kait Chegwidden qualified for the 5,000m at 18:28.96 which is the 13th fastest time in the field. Junior Savannah Boucher enters the 3,000m steeple chase seeded fifth at 11:06.51.
Freshman Allison Macon will compete in the 400m dash for the Mountaineers. Her fastest time in the event this season is 1:00.69.
In the field events, Alexa Tsiknas enters the pole vault field with the sixth highest mark at 3.35m. Tsiknas placed second in the pole vault at the 2011 PSAC Indoor meet to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Jenna Hoefer leads the charge for the Mountaineer throws. The sophomore enters the hammer throw with the fifth-best distance at 40.57m.
On the men's side, Yaw Boetang, Latimere Campbell and Jeysonlee Jones will look to make some noise in the 100m dash. Campbell leads the Mountie sprinters with a 10.99 qualifying time with Jones posting an 11.12 and Boetang an 11.23.
Jones and Campbell will also compete in the 200m. Campbell's 21.84 is the fourth fastest time in the field.
Rounding out the men's sprinters is Bob McCoy who enters the 400m dash with the eighth fastest time at 49.20 and Alex Bock in the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.18.
His last time out, senior Mike Robinson set a school record in the 800m run at 1:53.02. Robinson will look to place in the field with the seventh fastest time in the 800m. Robinson will also compete in the 1,500m run where he posted a qualifying time of 3:57.18.
Jordan Boothe and Jake Portock have also qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 800m. Boothe enters with a PR of 1:55.88 with Portock posting a 1:57.74.
Jake Shedden will compete in the 10,000m run where he posted a qualifying time of 32:50.56. Will Mullen qualified for the 3000m steeplechase at 9:49.29.
Tyler Savarese enters the pole vault field with the 12th best height at 4.35m.
Portock, Bock, Jesse Jones and Alex Beard will team up in the 4x800m relay with a qualifying time of 8:22.25. Campbell, Michael Hillary, Maxwell Lalwani and Trenton Schreiber will compete in the 4x100m while Campbell, McCoy, Lalwani and Hillary will compete in the 4x400m.
