Jena Matter paced four Mountaineers in double-figure scoring as the Mansfield University women's basketball team downed visiting Clarion University Friday night in PSAC crossover action at Decker Gymnasium.

"We really showed what can happen when we put two complete halves of basketball together" said interim head coach Alison Tagliaferri. "Our defense played with intensity and came together to force 27 turnovers"

Matter connected on 12-of-13 free throw attempts and hit four field goals in the contest. Her 12 free throws bested her previous career-high of nine set against Roberts Wesleyan on Jan. 3, 2012.

Sophomore Megan McSwain was 6-of-11 from the floor on her way to a career-high 15 points. Freshman Katie Fitzpatrick and redshirt junior Shaleta Heyward each added 14 points. Heyward hit a career-best four 3-pointers in the winning effort.

Clarion (7-7, 2-6 PSAC West) was led by Jasmine Boyd and Lauren Savulchak who came off the bench to each score 11 points. The Golden Eagle's season leading scorer Hannah Heeter recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.

The key to the Mountaineers success was limiting their total turnovers to just eight while forcing 27 in the game. Prior to tonight's game, Mansfield was averaging 26.9 turnovers an outing.

Mansfield (4-8, 2-6 PSAC East) held a nine-point advantage after the opening six minutes of play and extended their lead to 16 with 5:55 remaining in the half. However, the Eagles used a 21-6 run to close within one point of the Mounties going into halftime.

Heeter's jumper on the opening possession of the second half gave Clarion their first lead of the game at 41-40. But, the Mountaineers refused to let this one slip away as they scored 12 unanswered points to lead 53-41 with 13:32 remaining.

The Eagles closed within seven points, but Mansfield proved to be too much as it came away with the PSAC crossover victory.

The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Mounties.

Mansfield is back in action tomorrow night when it hosts Lock Haven University at Decker at 5:30 p.m.
