With the game tied at 22 at the half, it was looking like Northeast Bradford's game against Elk Lake on Monday was shaping up for a close finish.

No one could have predicted just how close it would wind up being.

The Panthers trailed by one in the closing seconds when J.R. Russell in-bounded the ball to Kurtis Mallow, who took the shot from just inside the three-point arc and hit the game winner with one tick left in the game to lift Northeast Bradford to a 52-51 victory.

"He (Mallow) started the game off a little slow, all the way around offensively and defensively, but he's one of those kids that doesn't lose his composure. He doesn't let anything get to him; he kept his composure and hit that big shot," Northeast Bradford coach Larry Otis said.

"Elk Lake didn't give up. They kept coming at us. They did a nice job with their defense, especially at the end."

Rob Robbins led the Panthers with 18 points and Mallow had 11 points for Northeast Bradford in the victory.

"I'm really excited for everybody. These kids were all sophomores last year. They took their lumps and took a beating playing a varsity schedule last year," Otis said. "It's exciting for them to know their hard work paid off tonight. Their patience they showed was the difference in tonight's game. There is a lot of junior leadership on this team, and hopefully it will go a long way this year."
