Friday night was special for the fans and racers as Ms. Motorsports 2010, Danielle Wilson, visited the speedway. Wilson was chosen at the annual Area Auto Racing News Motorsports Expo held each year in January. She is from the Virginia area and her first love is Late Model racing, but she does like any form of dirt racing. Wilson signed autographs and posed for pictures with each winner in victory lane. Three new winners found the fast way around the oval to bring home the checkers.

First division up was the Front Wheel Drive, where the field had 21 competitors all hoping to be able to capture the win. The winner's prize would be $500, as there were more than 20 cars taking the green flag. Kenny Underwood was the early race leader. Each of the drivers were hungry to pick up the victory, so that did lead to several cautions during the event. It was Andrew Dorman, who has struggled with flat tires the past couple of weeks, who took the lead away from Underwood. The battle ensued between Ron Kipp, Kenny Benjamin III and Underwood for the second position. Coming from the rear was current point leader Marcus Wood. He worked his way into the top five and was hoping to catch the Dorman machine. Unfortunately that would not happen as Benjamin and Wood were involved in a late race caution forcing both of them out of the event. When the checkered flag fell it was Dorman recording his first feature event of the season. It would also be the last night that Dorman would be racing here at Dunn Hill 2 as he is returning to college this week. Following him across the line in second was Bob Schultz, Kenny Underwood, Mike Ely and Klem Underwood.

Mini Stock division also had a new winner, but it was after the post-race inspection. Doug Colton crossed the finish line in first, but it was Travis Parks that captured the win. Parks has been making his way to the front and did finish in the fourth position in the night's event. However the top three, Colton, Ben Hulslander and Eric Ellsworth, were all found to be illegal in the post-race inspection. That moved Parks into the top honors taking home the win. Finishing in second was JR Bush, third was Shane Brown, fourth went to John McAdam and rounding out the top five was Mike Navone. A special victory lane celebration will be held for Parks and his team this Friday night.

The Factory Stock division continues to grow as each week new drivers bring out their machines for the first time. The youngster Freddie "Bubba" Peters had the luck on his side this past Friday as he worked his way through the field to capture his first win of the division. It was an exciting race for this driver who has struggled for most of the season. Peters had been missing from the track for a couple of weeks, but came back with his sights on capturing the win, which is just what he did, bringing him to victory lane. He thanked his mom and dad for everything they do to help him to race, along with all the other people who have helped as well. Rounding out the top five for the feature event were Donny Burgess, Tim Perham, Dale Ostrander and Stan Matthews.

Pro Stock was up next with 14 competitors all hoping to bring home the checkered flag. Starting up front after two weeks of not finishing the feature event was Chad Ely. It has been a tough time for this driver and his team, as mechanical problems have plagued them. When the green flag fell it was Ely who jumped into the lead. The battle behind the No. 57 was tight as Rich Sharpsteen, Ernie Martin and Shannon Oswald tried to get to the front. A caution sent the Sharpsteen and Martin machines to the pits. Only Martin was able to return to the event and he did finish the event. The battle up front now found Oswald being challenged by Wayne Baldwin, Rick Hand and Bobby Maynard. It was a tight battle as the leader, Ely, had checked out and only Oswald was able to get within striking range. Ely would not have it as he ran each lap smoothly using the lap cars to his advantage. When the checkers fell Ely recorded another win at the track. Coming across the line behind Ely was Oswald, Wayne Baldwin, Rick Hand and Bobby Maynard.

The final event of the evening was the IMCA Style Modified division. Ten teams were on-hand looking to dethrone JT McKernan from his win streak. The track was fast and these cars put on a great show for the fans. Qualifying race winner Harry Ely took the lead early in the event. Sonny Terry was right on his bumper trying to get around the No. 57. Coming through the field was Eddie Sites and JT McKernan, who battled each other as they have for the past few feature events. Sites made the pass for the lead on Ely, but McKernan had to work very hard to get around the Ely machine. Once around the No. 57, current point leader Sites was able to open a slight lead over the field. McKernan and Ely battled hard throughout the rest of the event. Sites crossed the finish line with the win followed by Ely, McKernan, Terry and Bruce Tinsley.

Another great night of racing and family fun at Dunn Hill 2 Speedway. Come to a special event this Wednesday night; it will be "Wild Ride Wednesday" in Monroeton, Pa. The 358 Modified will be running a special event along with the Pro Stock, Mini Stock and FWD divisions. The Pro Stock event will be a qualifier for the Trackside Products ROC Pro Stock event to be held in October at Five Mile Point Speedway. It should be a great night of racing, with gates opening at 5 p.m. and racing starting at 7 p.m. Friday night will be a regular show with the marriage ceremony for Billy and Ronda. Billy Groover is the driver of the No. 20 mini stock. For more information visit the Web site at www.dunnhill2speedway.com.

WVMP'S JAM-PACKED DAY OF RACING

This past Saturday the pits were packed with many competitors, while the grandstand filled in by race time. It was a day jam-packed with racing events that included "Go for the Green" in the mediums kart division with twin 15-lap feature events. Along with that special event and the rest of the regular show were two postponed feature events. The Sportsmen and 600 micros ran their make-up feature events from July 31.

The makeup events started off the day's events. Twelve Sportsmen took the green flag with the battle coming down to the final laps with Scott Lamphere taking home the win over Brock Moore. Dustin Fassett was in third, with Doug Johnson coming in fourth and finishing in the fifth position was Kyle Travers.

Up next the 600 micros came to the track for the event from July 31. Last week's feature winner, Dave Mooers, battled with Chad VanHorn and Brett Smith for the top position. Smith captured the lead and held off the strong run from VanHorn to record the victory. It would be the first win for the very sharp looking No. 25 of Smith. Rounding out the top five were VanHorn, Mooers, John Zionkowski and Dustin Jochum.

The first of twin 15-lap feature events was up for the medium kart division. Making his second appearance at WVMP, Dustin Prettyleaf let his presence be known. He not only recorded the win in the first 15-lap event, he came from within the pack to record the victory in the second 15-lap event. Finishing in second for both events was Tyler Chapman. Mike Ely finished in third in the first and fourth in the second. Bradley Sites came in fourth in the first event and third in the second race. Rounding out the top five in both events was Brian Fisher. All the karts in this division raced hard and tough in both of the feature events. Prettyleaf took home the $100 first-place prize for the events.

Prettyleaf continued on his winning streak by capturing the Heavies division, over Ely, Sites, Bob Coveney and Tom Yanac.

Sportkids had a great battle between Alex Shaffer and Colin Hadlock. Adding to the mix was Keith Lamphere, Jaye Winemiller and Derek Frederick. These youngsters race side-by-side during their feature event. Each held their line and competed with a lot of sportsmanship. Coming across the line to record his sixth feature win was Shaffer. Finishing in second was Hadlock; Lamphere was third, Winemiller was fourth and fifth was Frederick.

Seth Anderson padded his point lead by recording win number 10 over Mitchell Maynard. Maynard made a late race run to take the lead away from Anderson. Anderson held him off to pick up the win. Finishing in third was Craig Smith with McKaylee McCormick and Cody Keishner rounding out the top five.

Skylar Middendorf made his way back into victory lane to record his fourth win. He did it in style by grabbing the lead early in the event. He maintained a good lead over Matt Addonna who finished in second. Right on the rear bumper of the Addonna machine was Jared Zionkowski, who was third and currently has the points lead. After capturing his first checkered flag in the qualifying race, Dominic Rogers finished in fourth. Great run for Jacob Doyle who finished in the fifth position. It was great to see that Hayden Baumunk and Gary Webber were able to make the feature event after a nasty crash on the front stretch during their qualifying event.

The Clone division where the car count continues to grow found Tyler Chapman recording another feature event. Chapman held off Scott Lamphere and Eddie Sites to capture his ninth feature event. Rounding out the top five were great runs for both Krissy Baldwin and Logan Terry, who finished fourth and fifth.

Animal Heavies only had three karts competing, but it was one of the best races of the day's events. Wayne Miller, who picked up his second victory, battled hard with Derek Chapman. Both drivers raced side-by-side throughout the event with each one taking the lead. The final lap saw Miller just edging out the Chapman kart at the line by inches.

Jr. Gold was the final youngster event of the day's racing in the kart divisions. Four drivers have battled with three of them picking up a victory or two throughout the season. Who would be the winner today was the question everyone was asking. Nick Funk has dominated the class with seven wins, while Brianna Baumunk has let her presence be known by recording four wins. Keith Lamphere, who has been close to picking up his first win, has yet to accomplish it. The Lamphere kart has suffered some mechanical problems, which have held him back from the win. When the checkered flag fell it was Funk picking up his eighth win with John Noe in second, Baumunk in third and Lamphere in fourth.

Sportswomen had a great race between the four competitors with Baumunk padding her points lead with the win. Finishing in second was Krissy Baldwin, Tammy Patak was in third and Jaye Winemiller who has just started racing in this division finished in fourth.

The final kart event of the evening found a new face picking up their first win. Jeff Arnold took the lead from Kyle Traver, holding him off to bring home the checkered flag. Traver gave Arnold a gallant run for the top spot, but Arnold maintained a good lap around the oval for the win. Coming across the finish line behind Arnold and Traver were Brock Moore, Jake Maynard and Curtis Fassett.

Junior Slingshots were up next with Jared Zionkowski taking a commanding lead in the feature and not looking back. Zionkowski recorded win number five and kept his championship hopes alive. Coming in second was Derek Frederick, who is also in second in the points race. Third went to Skylar Middendorf, fourth to Alex Shaffer and fifth went to Kamdin Maby.

All Star Slingshots for the adults found Steve Crooker making a return trip to celebrate in victory lane. Crooker is piloting the back-up car belonging to Carl Bittenbender, who was atop the points lead until this past week. Bittenbender was missing from the action on the track. Rich Howard tried to catch the Crooker machine to take away the win, but had to settle for second. Steve Ogazaly, Collin Hadlock and Bill Reidenbach rounded out the top five.

The 600 Micros ran the regular event with Dustin Jochum coming home with his third win in his rookie season. He held off the strong charge of Brett Smith and Chad VanHorn. Last week's feature winner Dave Mooers recorded the fourth position, while Brian Sherwood finished in fifth. It was great to see Sherwood back at WVMP, as his asphalt track was not competing this past Saturday, giving him the chance to run.

The 270 Micros found Jacob Hendershot recording his second feature event in a row. Hendershot held off the tough competitor Jordan Title, who tried to work his magic to get around the 27 machine. A tight battle between Title and Bobby Maynard in the closing laps gave Title just what he needed to win. Title and Maynard finished in second and third, while Mark Wurzler and Jerry Traver finished in fourth and fifth.

This Saturday's event will be a special one for all the youth kart divisions. "Back to School Bach" will find all the youth karts running special events. Each youth will receive a special gift from the track so they will have a memento of the day's event. Mark you calendars next Saturday, Sept. 5; the track will be closed to celebrate the Labor Day holiday. There's still time to take advantage of the "Family Fun Pass;" for $25 you'll get grandstand admission for mom, dad and two children, plus four hotdogs, four french fries and four drinks. It's a great way to spend your Saturday night with the family and see some very exciting racing action. For more information about the Back to School Bash and other information visit the Web site at www.wvmpracing.com. Race day gates open at 3:30 p.m. with green flag racing at 5:30 p.m. sharp. Don't miss any of the action at the Nightmare of the Northern Tier.

JIMMY ZACHARIAS WINS AT CHEMUNG, EYES NASCAR SUNOCO MODIFIED POINT TITLE

The action was intense Friday night at WilliamsAutoGroup.com presents Chemung Speedrome as the headline division title remains up for grabs by three drivers. JR Kent arrived with a 1-point lead over Jimmy Zacharias, but left trailing him by 11. Bobby Osgood remains in the chase, 16 points out of the lead. Zacharias picked up a very crucial second feature win in the NASCAR Sunoco Modified division, while others in victory lane included Jeff Goodwin (Street Stocks), Mike Alcaro (INEX Legends), Milton Price (4 Cylinders) and Jeremiah Clonch (FWD). The stage is set, and the actors will all be there for the final dramatic showdown this Friday night.

The three-way race for the NASCAR Sunoco Modified title still includes the same drivers, but now in a different order. Calls, recalls, and penalties pretty much summed up the drama-filled night. Zack Curren led the first lap of the 40-lap feature, but Zacharias got around him on the second lap and built up a huge lead over Kent and a run for second Curren and Rusty Smith. As the race neared the halfway point it was clear that a caution flag would be the only thing could make it a race again, as Zacharias had already lapped five cars. That caution occurred when Smith and Curren ended their battle for third with tandem spins in turn four.

What occurred next was a bit out of the ordinary. For the restart, the five-lap cars were lined up where they were running, putting Kent (second) back to seventh in the running order. When the race resumed Osgood got into Kent between turns three and four. The head flagger determined that the lap cars were the reason for the contact and they put the cars on the lead lap up front. He also put Kent back to second and Osgood to third for the restart.

That decision, though confusing, didn't sway Zacharias. He picked up right where he left off and left the competition behind. Osgood recovered and got up to second, but no further. At the stripe Zacharias had his second win of the year. More importantly, the former Speedrome Junior champ put himself back atop the point standings. Following his victory lap he gave credit to the car, the shiny chrome No. 71.

"We talked about it all week, switching to this car. But it's been really strong for me this year and once the decision was made, I just had to focus on the job at hand."

He went on to thank his family and sponsors that have helped put him in contention. Osgood, Smith, Curren and Kent rounded out the top five. Bobby Osgood appeared to win his heat race, but he received a one-spot penalty for on-track contact during a caution. That win went to Zacharias while Kent claimed the other heat.

Goodwin did everything he needed to do if he has any hopes of taking the Street Stock title for the third year in a row. He swept both his heat and the 25-lap feature. But with Mike Nichols finishing behind him, he didn't chop away many points leading into the title-deciding last race. This one was classic Goodwin, going four-wide off turn four on the opening lap and crossing the stripe as the leader. Chris Daugherty, who won the other heat, was second with Joe Lane, Brittany Jack and Ken Evans among the early lead group. Jack and Nichols worked their way to second and third while Goodwin sailed away. On the 16th lap Jack went high in turns one and two. Nichols took a peek but didn't complete the pass until turn four, when Jack bobbled in the corner. Nichols chopped away at Goodwin's lead, but he ran out of laps. Goodwin got the win - his fifth - and took a well-deserved victory lap.

"The car needs to do better in the center, but it did what I needed it to do tonight," he said from the Horseheads Pick-a-Part victory lane. Nichols, Daugherty, John Lane and Evans all finished in the top five.

Alcaro, Andrew Stotler and point leader Justin Petcosky got things going in the INEX Legends division by winning their heat races. AJ Griffin powered around pole-sitter Stotler and led until Richie Vanderpool dove to the inside and took over the top spot. Griffin, Daren Scherer and Matt Evans tangled in turn two, with Evans tagging the foam and ending his night. When racing resumed Alcaro continued his march to the front and got around Vanderpool on the sixth lap. Petcosky was up to second and started beside Alcaro on a lap 17 restart. Alcaro led the way while Tony Hanbury, who had moved up from 23rd to third, was all over Petcosky in a battle for second. The final caution, for debris from the Richie Coy machine, set up one last shot for the leaders to deny Alcaro another win. It wasn't to be, and he celebrated win number 12. Petcosky finished second, ahead of Vanderpool, Hanbury and Chris Young.

Price won the battle - his third feature in the 4 Cylinder division - but Gene Purvis may have won the war. Their 20-lap feature had four lead changes among three drivers, with Price and Phil Haner battling for the early race lead. Haner's night ended early when his car broke and brought out the first of two cautions. When racing resumed, Purvis got around Price for the lead while Frank Morich and Archie Haner went at it for third. Their battle resulted in a spin and both restarted at the rear. Price and Haner continued to contest for the top spot, but Price had the inside groove covered. He sailed across the finish line first, ahead of Purvis, Haner, Morich and Kyle Ferris. Heat winner Purvis needs only to start the final feature and the championship is his.

Clonch had no trouble dominating the FWD division in their final race of the year. Clonch drove the Zack Keeney machine, which had won five of the nine races run to date. Keeney, on vacation with his family, made a wise choice and Clonch brought it home ahead of division champ, Kurtis Benjamin.

The final point race of the year is coming up Friday night and all of the championships will be determined. It's a four-division program of Modifieds, Street Stocks, INEX Legends and 4 Cylinders. Pits open at 4 p.m., with practice and grandstand gates open at 5:30 p.m., and the first heat race hitting the track at 7:15 p.m. Admission is just $10 for adults, $6 for seniors and kids ages 5-16, and always free for kids under age 5. Fans are reminded to bring their grandstand ticket stubs from Aug. 20 for a discount.

SOUTHERN TIER STANDOUT DAREN SCHERER BRINGS RUNNER-UP SPOT IN RoC REGULAR SEASON TO SUNDAY'S 'RETURN OF THE ROC'N CONCRETE RUMBLE'

Sunday's "Return of the ROC'n Concrete Rumble" at Shangri-La II Motor Speedway marks the second of five Championship series events for the Race of Champions Modified Tour. Matt Hirschman is the favorite for the title as usual, but the second generation racer from Northampton, Pa. has a new challenger in 2010.

Binghamton's Daren Scherer finished the regular season part of the schedule 33 points behind Hirschman and he's confident heading into this Sunday's 4 p.m. start of the richest and most important race in Shangri-La II's brief history. As with all RoC events, it will be an "all racing" night with no time trials and an all green flag 100-lap feature. Shangri-La II's ASA Late Models, Sportsman Modifieds and Street Stocks plus the INEX Legends will join the RoC stars in action.

Scherer's Binghamton Mets-sponsored No. 3 is one of the most easily recognized cars on the RoC tour. He doesn't run every week at Shangri-La II, but he's made numerous appearances, including a victory in the 2009 Fall Brawl event for the Sportsman cars.

"Experience never hurts," he commented, while noting that the touring pros won't exactly be handicapped. "It's not really that difficult a track to learn, and we've already been there for one RoC race," he said. Scherer also expects to race his INEX Legends car at the Concrete Castle on Sunday.

Like most other drivers, Scherer doesn't expect tire wear to be a factor, even at the 100-lap distance.

"We're planning to go all the way, because the track's not very abrasive," he explained. In addition, the "Return of the ROC'n Concrete Rumble" will be held late in the day, maybe finishing under the lights. By contrast, the 75-lap race in May won by Chuck Hossfeld took place in the middle of a hot afternoon.

Adding interest on another front to Sunday's proceedings is the fact that the unclaimed 50-50 winner's share from the May RoC event is carried over, meaning the jackpot will start at more than $1,000 and grow from there.

Gates open at 1 p.m. on Sunday with practice at 2:30 p.m. and the first heat at 4 p.m. Shangri-La II Motor Speedway is located on top of the ridge on Route 17C, one mile east of Tioga Center. The track is easily accessed from Route 17, the Southern Tier Expressway, by taking Route 17C east from Exit 62 (Nichols) or Route 17C west from Exit 64 (Owego/Ithaca). For more information, call (607) 330-2622 or visit the track Web site, shangrila-2.com.

CLARK AND BUMAN SCORE WINS AT CHAMPION

The program on Aug. 14 at Champion Speedway began with handicap racing where the more skilled riders start further behind the lesser experienced. Andy Crawford was able to hold the pack off to win the first ride with Dave Clark in second, Jeremy "Darkhorse" Parsons in third and Keith Hawkins in fourth. Casey Donholt followed that up with a win of his own from the 50-yard line with Adam "The Missile" Mittl second, Ray Barondick third and Shawn "Steamboat" Engel fourth. Tuff McBride ended the heats rounds by taking a checkered flag as well. Behind him were Mikey Buman, Russ Cornell and Jerry "Buefford" Harman.

In the first handicap semifinal McBride was coming from a 50-yard disadvantage, but picked off two riders and passed them on the first three laps. On lap four he made a spectacular split of three more to take the lead and eventually the win. Gaining transfer spots in second and third were Clark and Donholt, who just got Hawkins by inches at the line. Engel was fifth and Harman pulled out with an injury.

Buman and Mittl took first and second in the second semi with Parsons getting third and the last spot in the final. Crawford and Cornell were fourth and fifth with Barondick sixth.

McBride kicked off the scratch heat racing with another win. Mittl rode hard and took second with Crawford third and Engel not finishing. Clark, Parsons and Donholt then had a great race with all four elbows apart for four laps and Clark winning with Parsons second, Donholt third and Barondick fourth. Buman won his heat over Hawkins, and Cornell with a open spot due to Harman out.

Parsons and Mittl blasted out in front in the first scratch semi, but on the third lap Mittl hit a big rut in the track and got moved way out. This opened the door for Buman to move into second and grab a transfer position. Parsons won, Mittl was third with Hawkins fourth and Cornell fifth. McBride stayed unbeaten when he won the last semi. Donholt was second, Clark third, Engel fourth and Crawford fifth.

For the last chance Mittl came out on a 22-inch rear wheel as there was enough dirt to make it work. It made for a great show as Mittl rode the outside and Clark the inside with Mittl winning. Hawkins was third, and Cornell fourth.

Buman drew the pole for the scratch final with Donholt in two, McBride in three, Parsons in four and Mittl in five. Everyone seemed to get bottled up off the start, but Buman emerged from the pile and rode a smooth inside line for his second win of the year. McBride was next with Mittl third, Parsons fourth and Donholt fifth.

The handicap main had five of the six riders on the 50-yard marker and only Clark ahead of them on the 40. Clark was to make no mistakes and held off the pack for the main event win. McBride was second for most of the race, but Parsons made a nice outside pass on the last turn to grab second. Buman capped off a good night with fourth, Mittl was fifth and Donholt sixth.

Champion Speedway now has the new go-kart track open and plays host to a huge legends of speedway night plus regular race program on Aug. 28 and the U.S. Open Nationals Sept. 4 and 5.

EDDIE WHITE FINDS THE WINNER CIRCLE AT THUNDER MOUNTAIN

The George Lewis Memorial and Fan Appreciation Night was a success at Thunder Mountain Speedway. The pit gates were opened so fans could come into the pit area and meet their favorite drivers and get autographs. When the action took to the track, winners included: Eddie White (Modified Sportsman), Earl Zimmer (Hurricane Street Stocks), Brad Weaver (IMCA Modifieds), Nick Griest (Road Bandits) and Ken Winn (Road Warriors).

Bret Welch and Gary Card Jr. led the field of Modified Sportsman to the green flag for their 25-lap feature event. Welch would lead the opening two laps before going pit side with a mechanical problem. Card would then take command on the lead with the pressure building as Eddie White and Brian White were on a mission to make it an exciting three-way dance for the top spot. Card would lead until lap 16 when Eddie White finally completed the pass for the top spot. Eddie White would lead the remaining nine laps for the win with Brian White, Card, Tom Collins and Ryan Olsommer completing the top five finishers. Card and Randy Brokaw won the eight-lap heat races held for the division.

Zimmer started fifth in the 20-lap feature event for the Hurricane Street Stocks and picked up the win. Zimmer would take control of the lead on lap nine after passing Ricky Marsh. Don Russell Jr. finished second with Marsh, Gene Sharpsteen and Nick Nye completing the top five finishers. Norm Whittemore, Nye and Zimmer won the eight-lap heat races held for the division.

Weaver visited victory lane after winning the 20-lap feature event for the IMCA Modifieds. Weaver started sixth and wasted no time taking his No. 2c machine into the lead on lap three. The pressure would build towards the end of the race for Weaver as he had to hold off challenges from multiple-time winner from this season Matt Roberts and "Hollywood" Howard Jones. Weaver would drive the preferred groove around the speedway and hit all marks to take the checkered below head starter Sam Folk. Roberts, Jones, Jason Tuttle and Jerry Lobdell Jr. completed the top five finishers. Tyler Stoddard and Weaver won the heat races for the division.

Griest won the 15-lap feature event for the Road Bandits division with George Brown, Dan Wood, Shawn Casey and Jeff Wood completing the top five finishers. Griest won the six-lap heat race held for the division.

In Road Warriors action, it was Winn taking the win over Jeff Witt Jr. and Harold Walburn. Walburn was the winner of the six-lap heat race held for the division.

The racing action continues on Friday, Aug. 27, for the Modified Sportsman, Hurricane Street Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, Road Bandits and Road Warriors. Gates open at 5 p.m., practice at 6:45 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 p.m. The Hurricane Harry Uhl Jr. Memorial was cancelled due to weather conditions on Sunday, Aug. 22 and rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25.
