Oldroyd among newcomers for MU cross country
MANSFIELD - Head coach Mike Rohl has announced the addition of seven student-athletes to the Mansfield University cross country team for the upcoming 2012 season.
The class includes athletes from Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey and includes five transfer students. "We have a great group with really high character this year" explained Rohl. "They're going to work hard and I'm looking forward to the upcoming season."
2012 Men's Cross Country Recruiting Class
Matt Oldroyd (Troy / Troy /Shippensburg)
Oldroyd spent a year at Shippensburg University when he was a PSAC qualifier before transferring to Mansfield to be closer to home. In high school, he won two state medals in the 800m run including a second place finish as a junior.
"Matt is going to improve a great deal in this environment"
Jordan Booth (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Liberty)
Booth comes to Mansfield from Jackson Liberty High School in New Jersey. He registered a personal best of 4:26 in the mile run.
"Jordan is a talented recruit and a great mid-distance runner"
Andrew Edwards (Bradford, NY / Campbell Savona)
Edwards turned in a personal best time of 4:32 in the mile run at Campbell Savona. He finished 3rd in the 3000m steeplechase at Mansfield University's Molly Dry Invitational.
"Andrew will make a tremendous amount of improvement during his first season in our program"
Jacob Portock (Harleysville / Souderton / St. Francis)
Portock comes to Mansfield after spending two years with Division I St. Francis (Pa.) where he was a member of the Red Flash cross country and track & field teams. He competed on the 12th-fastest 4x800m team in the nation in high school, recording a 7:43.69.
"Jacob is a student of the sport and is going to do very well here at Mansfield"
Eric Scherer (Palmyra / Annville-Cleona / Thiel)
Scherer joins the Mountaineers after competing for Thiel College for a season. He turned in a 27:10 8K time during the 2011 cross country season.
"Eric was a solid cross country runner in high school. I'm looking forward to see him compete at the collegiate level at Mansfield."
2012 Women's Cross Country
Savannah Boucher (New Hartford, NY / New Hartford / Mohawk Valley C.C.)
A junior college transfer, Boucher was a four-time NJCAA III National Champion and an All-American at Mohawk Valley. Last fall, Boucher won an individual national championship at the NJCAA cross country championships pacing her team to a fourth place finish.
During the outdoor track & field season, she led the Hawks to a national title by winning the 5000m, 10,000m runs and the 3000m steeplechase on her way to being named track athlete of the meet.
"Savannah is very talented and will have an instant impact this season. You can never replace Brenae (Edwards), but Savannah is as close as you can get."
Lydia Sakowski (Hughesville / Hughesville / Bloomsburg)
Sakowski joins the Mountaineer program after transferring from Bloomsburg University. Although she never ran cross country in high school, Sakowski has turned in solid results recently in several road races.
