Redskins use strong ground game to power past CMVT
SAYRE - The Sayre Redskins used a powerful running attack and stingy defense to open the 2011 season with a 29-8 win over the visiting CMVT Rams last night. Kyle Post, Jesse Dagutis, Jeremy Kyc, and Lucas Simonis took turns toting the pigskin, but it was Dagutis who shone the brightest, rushing for 212 yards and 3 scores on the night.
The Sayre defense started the night by forcing a 3-and-out, and it would not take long for the Redskin rushing attack to strut its stuff. Starting on their 39, Simonis ran right for 3 yards before Post went around left end for 29 more. On first and ten from the CMVT 29, Dagutis took a toss sweep around the right end and followed his blockers all the way in for the score. Simonis ran in the try for two, and at 8:33 of the opening quarter Sayre led 8-0.
Following another 3-and-out, Sayre began their second drive on their 29. They put together a 14 play drive with short runs that took them to the CMVT 25, but on a first down play Bradley Felt fumbled the snap and CMVT recovered.
The Rams returned the favor on the very next play as Quinn Roberts coughed up the ball and the Redskins recovered. Both teams would trade punts as the offenses struggled, until late in the second quarter when Dagutis would again hit paydirt, this time on an inside trap play from 43 yards out. Simonis was stopped short on the try for two, and Sayre led 14-0 with 4:11 left before half.
Once again the defenses stiffened and the teams traded punts, With just over a minute left, CMVT tried a deep pass attempt that was intercepted by Dagutis and returned to the Ram 20 yard line. The Redskins went into their hurry up offense, but were stopped after 4 straight runs at the 6 yard line as the first half clock expired.
The second half looked much like the first, with a controlling ground game and stifling defensive play. Following a Ram punt to the 20 yard line, Dagutis would need only one play to light up the scoreboard for his third and final score on the night, taking another inside trap and rumbling 80 yards, Simonis added his second two point try with a run off the right side, and Sayre was in command 22-0 with 4:08 left in the third.
Forcing yet another CMVT punt, the Redskins put together a nice drive before Kyle Post fumbled on a 3rd down carry, turning the ball over at the Ram 12.
After 3 plays netted them minus 10 yards, a punt from deep in their own end zone set up Sayre with great field position. On first down from the Ram 34, Jeremy Kyc showed good speed for a big back as he took a toss sweep around right end and outran all defenders for the score. James Harbst added the extra point and the lead was 29-0 with 9:50 left.
CMVT would put together their only drive of the night as they covered 77 yards in 11 plays with Quinn Roberts going in from 31 yards out. Q.B. Clint Snyder took a boot around the right side for the 2 point conversion, and the final score was set, 29-8.
Sayre totaled 382 yards rushing on 49 carries, while Felt completed 1 of 3 passes for 5 yards.
The Redskin defense held CMVT to 139 total yards, with 138 of that total coming in their final three drives of the fourth quarter.
Next week the Redskins travel to Our Lady of Lourdes Regional, while CMVT is at Greater Nanticoke Area.
