WAVERLY, N.Y. - Despite a furious Wyalusing comeback, the Lady Redskins held on to win 44-36 in the opening round of the Waverly Christmas Tournament Friday.

Early on it was all Sayre as they jumped out to a 7-2 first quarter lead then added to it by the half, leading 23-14.

Wyalusing fought back in the third, cutting the lead to 31-22 as they headed into the final quarter.

Down 31-22 Wyalusing's Mackenzie Martin was fouled beyond the three point line by Sayre's Kelly Villanti. She would hit all three freebies to cut the lead to 31-25. Paighton Martin would add two more free throws to cut the lead to 31-27 and bring more momentum over to the Rams.

That was followed by back to back lay-ups by Wyalusing's Arielle Kneller and Kasey DeVoir to knot things up at 31-all with 3:30 left to play.

Sayre would retake the lead on a Villanti free throw. That was followed by Kneller earning a chance to put her team ahead with two freebies of her own but both came up short.

After a second half drought the Redskins found the range again as Elyse Skerpon and Mollie Robinson hit back to back threes to put Sayre up 38-31.

With less than a minute to play Skerpon found her way to the foul line where she hit both, putting the Redskins up 40-31.

Mackenzie Martin would put a scare into Sayre, hitting a three with 37 seconds left to cut it to 40-34 but Sayre didn't miss their freebies, going 4-for-4 in the final 30 seconds to put away the game.

Robinson, Skerpon and Villanti had 11 points each to lead Sayre. Robinson added eight boards, six steals and three assists in the game.

Kelsey Young chipped in with four points and four assists while Kristen Tappan added two points. Paige Wampole and Adrienne Malorzo netted one point each with Malorzo grabbing five rebounds.
