HERSHEY - The Haggerty sisters PIAA run ended Friday as Meredith and Melinda lost to York Catholic's Ava and Anna Spoden 6-2 and 6-3 in AA girls' doubles tennis action.
Regardless of the loss, the sisters are still happy.
"It was great" Meredith said about being able to play at states, "It was my goal. I was glad I got to do it. It was my dream."
Meredith was also thrilled about finishing her career with her sister.
"That made it extra special."
Early on the two were a little inundated.
"We didn't know what to expect when we got down here" Meredith said about states. "It was very overwhelming" Melinda added, "Going out on the court we were just too nervous. I didn't stroke the ball well to start off with and it definitely hurt us in the long run."
Regardless, the two recovered.
"We definitely knew we could play with them" Melinda said, "You just got to do it. We lost the points that we needed but I definitely think if we could play them again we would beat them."
In the second set the sisters won two games in a row and looked to be cruising.
"It was very overwhelming when we came but it worked well" Meredith said, "We played well at the end."
There was a little bit of the twilight zone mixed in the match as the sisters were matched up with another pair of sisters who were also left and right handed.
"That was strange" Melinda said, "It was very ironic, but it was cool. We've never played against sisters like that."
Meredith agreed.
"It was kind of ironic that we got to play them" she said about the pair of sisters "They were right handed and left handed, too. We knew how to play them but at the same time they knew how to play us."
While Meredith will be playing college next year, Melinda has her eyes set on returning to states.
"My goal is to come back here next year and do something" she said.
For now, though, the two will be happy being the first girls double team from the NTL to make it down to Hershey.
"It was great" Melinda said, "It something we'll remember forever. It was a great experience."
Meredith agreed.
"It was a lot of fun."
