Second annual Ryan's Hope Memorial Softball Tournament held
The weather didn't dampen the spirits of the ball teams scheduled for the Ryan's Hope Tournament held Aug. 14 and 15 at the Wheel Inn ballfield in Ralston. Saturday was a cool and breezy day with Sunday's rain causing several team players to do their very best in puddles and mud.
Seventeen teams entered the tournament, several traveling miles to play.
The teams included: The Mustangs sponsored by Aquavac Transport Co. LLC, Towanda; Jegs sponsored by Schoonover Plumbing and Heating, Canton; Fast Fords sponsored by Step-by-Step Consulting, Suffolk, Va.; Wendy Fitch Bankson, Proprietor; SVT sponsored by Parker Machine Co., Canton; Bud's Kin, sponsored by Eileen Thompson Day Care, Mansfield; Leroy General Store, sponsored by Leroy General Store, Leroy; War Hawks, sponsored by Lemoreview Farms, Canton; Averages Jakes, sponsored by Average Jakes, Sonestown; Dandy Dawgs, Sponsored by Dandy Mini Mart, Sayre and Guthrie Healthcare System, Sayre; Morse Electric sponsored by Darrin Mores of Morse Electric, Roaring Branch; Weed's Wackers, sponsored by Devon Weed, Troy; Upside Downers sponsored by Destiny Builders, Elmira, N.Y.; Terry's Titans, sponsored by Barb and Laverne Spencer, Canton; Storming Mamfas, sponsored by Rodman Holmes, Florida; Rudy's Bombers, sponsored by Passerie's Garage and Auto Sales, Canton; and the Canton Grill, sponsored by the Canton Grill, Rich White, proprietor; Canton Firemen, sponsored by the Canton Firemen, Canton.
The competition was great and after many hours of ball playing with double elimination, the last three teams standing received trophies and checks make payable to the charities of their choice. The third-place team, Weed's Wackers, donated their total winnings of $486.38 to three individuals recently involved in an automobile accident. The second-place team, Morse Electric, donated their winnings of $729.57 to two individuals with health problems.
The winning team, Leroy General Store, donated half of their winnings of $1,215.95 to Bradford County Human Services, Unit 1 and the other half to an individual with medical problems.
The tournament would like to thank all individuals involved. The players were superb, all working so hard to clean the water off the field; the volunteer ambulance crew from Ralston was exemplary; Deb and Jada Smith, along with husband Bob, did a fantastic job keeping us everyone fed at L'il Andy's Concessions; Tracy and Ned Whitehead did a perfect job with their scorekeeping and their play-by-play announcements.
Guy Kapichok, Mike Whitehead, Roger Vermilya and Joe Costellano, along with several others, did an exceptional job of umpiring, many times under extreme weather conditions.
Jacob Holmes, Ryan O'Dell and Chris Whitehead also did an excellent job of scorekeeping/announcing while giving Ned and Tracy a break. Crist Palmer's crew at Bradford County Sanitation was there for us also, donating their time and effort in keeping the bathrooms clean and pumped. We also wish to thank Kylia Taft and Akia Parker for the donation of their lemonade sales to the cause.
A special thank you also to Corrie and Darrin Morse for all their hard work cleaning the field, preparing the field, supplying the children with warm, dry clothing and just being there whenever we needed anything whatsoever. It takes so many people to put together an event such as this, and Ryan's Hope appreciates all your kindness and helpfulness.
Next year's Ryan's Hope details will be posted on his Web site in early spring 2011. Please check www.ryanshopeweb.webs.com for details and pictures from this year's event.
