Second-half outburst lifts Millersville past Mansfield 75-68
The Mountaineers held a 10-point advantage at the half, but Mansfield was outscored 50-33 in the second half as Millersville came away with the 75-68 victory Saturday afternoon in PSAC East play at Pucillo Gymnasium.
Sophomore Joe Bell scored a game-high 19 points - including 13 in the second half - to lead the Mountaineers offensively. Bell also pulled down eight rebounds in the loss.
Charles Becoats hit three treys on his way to 16 points in the contest. Becoats has hit at least three field goals from beyond the arc in each of the last four games. Kenny Johnson added 12 points, six assists and four steals.
Millersville (15-6, 11-4 PSAC) was led by Anthony Coleman who scored a team-high 19 points. Kemar Williams netted 12 points with Danny Rodrigues adding 11 points for the Marauders.
Mansfield (5-14, 3-12 PSAC) took a three-point lead in the opening two minutes of the game, but Millersville fought back to tie the game at 9-9 at the 15:45 mark. The Marauders took their first lead of the game on an Xavier Mumford tip-in with under 10 minutes to play in the half.
Trailing by five points with just under nine minutes remaining, Mansfield used a 19-4 run to close out the half and take a 35-25 lead into the break.
In the second half, Millersville fought back to tie the game at 38-38 in the first five minute of play. The Marauders continued their run to lead 51-42 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game.
Johnson and Bell led the Mounties on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes as Mansfield tied the game at 51-51. However, the Marauders outscored Mansfield 24-17 over the final eight minutes to pull out the win.
The Mountaineers outrebounded Millersville 39-32. Mansfield surrendered 24 turnovers in the game with 16 of those being forced.
Mansfield hosts West Chester Wednesday at Decker Gymnasium for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
