Shippensburg downs MU women's soccer
Shippensburg scored three second half goals to break open a tight first half game in recording a 5-1 win over Mansfield in a PSAC women's soccer match Wednesday afternoon.
The game started fast and furious, with Mansfield's Erika Moyer lofting a kick over the crossbar on a breakaway in the first 25 seconds of the game. Shippensburg (5-4-3, 3-4-2 PSAC) scored just two minutes later when Ashley Vellucci took a perfectly placed corner in front of the goal by Rachel Hess and headed it into the Mansfield goal.
The Raiders made it 2-0 four minutes later with Vellucci launching an 18-footer.Mansfield (2-7-1, 0-6-1 PSAC) actually controlled much of the action in the first half getting off seven shots to Shippensburg's three and final got on the scoreboard on a breakaway by Erika Moyer in the 33rd minute that hopped over the out coming diving goalie. It was the seniors fifth goal of the season and 15th of her career.
The game, which was hard-fought and physical by both teams, had a major shift when Mansfield goalie Alexis Wilhelm was issued a red-card after coming out of the goal and making contact with a Shippensburg player on a breakaway.
Wilhelm was forced to leave the game and Mansfield had to play a player short for the remaining 23 minutes of the game.
Shippensburg's Molly Sanders scored off the penalty kick to give Shippensburg a 3-1 lead. Despite a determined effort from the home team, Shippensburg managed to wear down the shorthanded Mountaineers getting goals in the 76th and 81st minutes.
Red-shirt freshman Alexis Getty, of Wellsboro, had three shots including two on goal for the Mountaineers.
Mansfield travels to California on Saturday.
