Southern Tier Smoke fall in repeat at Finger Lakes Classic
The Southern Tier Smoke 16U softball team fell just short of defending its title at the Finger Lakes Classic this weekend, losing 7-2 to the Adirondack Diamonds in the championship game.
The Elmira Heights-based Smoke features five players - Sam Mennig, Kiana Manuel, Stephanie Bellis, Megan Wilbur and Becca Morgan - from Waverly.
The Smoke beat the Adirondack Diamonds, 8-3 in the opening game of pool, which was shortened to two games due to heavy rains Saturday, then dropped a 4-0 decision to Rochester Revenge.
In single-elimination bracket action Sunday, the Smoke avenged its loss to the Revenge with a 4-3 win, then beat the Heat, 6-2, to advance to the title game.
Southern Tier Smoke 8, Adirondack Diamonds 3
The Smoke jumped out to a 4-0 lead, then scored the final runs of the game in an 8-3 win over the Adirondack Diamonds in the opening game of pool play.
Sam Mennig allowed three runs on nine hits, while striking out four and walking three in picking up the complete-game win.
Stephanie Bellis led the Smoke offense with three hits, a run scored and two RBI, while Kiana Manuel had two hits, three runs scored and an RBI and Rachael Sutryk stroked a pair of singles, scored a run and drove in one runs.
Megan Wilbur and Mennig each added a single and an RBI in the win.
Rochester Revenge 4, Southern Tier Smoke 0
Katelyn Weber handcuffed the Smoke's hitters, limiting them to five hits - all singles - in a 4-0 decision in the final game of the rain-shortened pool play.
Rachael Sutryk led the Smoke with two hits, while Kiana Manuel, Sam Mennig and Megan Wilbur each had one hit.
Mennig was tagged with a complete-game loss. She allowed four runs on seven hits, while striking out three and walking two.
Weber struck out five and walked none in the win.
Southern Tier Smoke 4, Rochester Revenge 3
Sam Mennig scattered 12 hits and had a key hit in the Smoke's 4-3 win over the Revenge in the opening-round of elimination bracket play.
Mennig struck out five and walked three in seven innings of work.
Bellis led the Smoke with two hits, while Rachael Sutryk, Emily Knowlden and Mennig each had a hit and an RBI. Becca Morgan and Kiana Manuel each scored a run and stole a base.
With the Smoke trailing 2-1, Morgan reached on an error to lead off the top of the fifth inning.
Two outs later, Morgan stole second and scored when Sutryk stroked a 1-1 pitch into left field for a single to tie the game.
Sutryk, who took second on the throw home, scored on Knowlden's RBI single to give the Smoke the lead for good.
Mennig added an insurance run with an RBI single to score Emily Crowell, who was running for Knowlden.
Southern Tier Smoke 6, Heat 2
The Smoke scored three runs in the top of the first inning and Emily Crowell made them stand in their 6-2 win over the Heat to advance to the championship game.
Kiana Manuel walked to lead off the game and Rachael Sutryk followed with a single up the middle.
Emily Knowlden then smoked a double down the right-field line to plate Manuel.
One out later, Dani Callear hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0, then Stephanie Bellis hit a ground-ball single to the right side to plate Becca Morgan (in as a courtesy-runner for Knowlden) to cap the rally.
Megan Wilbur homered to dead center field to lead off the fourth inning and increase the lead to 4-0, then Manuel added a two-run home run to center field in the top of the sixth inning to make it 6-2.
Adirondack Diamonds 7, Southern Tier Smoke 2
The Adirondack Diamonds scored the first seven runs of the game and cruised to a 7-2 win over the Smoke in the title game of the Finger Lakes Classic.
Dani Callear led the Smoke offense with two hits and two RBI, while Rachael Sutryk and Emily Knowlden each had a hit and a run scored and Sam Mennig, Stephanie Bellis and Megan Wilbur added one hit apiece. Becca Morgan had a stolen base.
Mennig was tagged with the loss. She allowed six runs on 10 hits, while striking out three and walking one.
