Sullivan boys, girls pick up wins over Troy, Athens
LAPORTE - The Sullivan County boys and girls' cross-country teams each picked up a pair of wins on their homecoming Saturday.
The Griffins girls beat Athens 18-37 and Troy 15-50 with the Wildcats also winning 15-50 over the Trojans.
Sullivan went 1-through-4 led by Bridget Paonessa winning in 24:50, right in front of teammate Bethany Lambert (24:52). Taking third was Emily McMahon (26:05) and Mackenzie Doyle (26:22).
Athens' Emily Madigan was fifth in 26:22 followed by teammate Sarah Montrose (26:24) while Troy's Leah Ward (26:54) was seventh. Athens' Ashley Follett (26:58), Sullivan's Kelly Kramer (27:18) and Athens' Michaela Babcock (27:53) rounded out the top 10.
On the boys' side Sullivan edged Troy 25-30 and Athens 24-31 while the Trojans topped their NTL rivals 23-32.
Troy's Ethan Calkins won the race in 18:51 followed by Athens' Gabe Herbst (19:06) in second. Sullivan took the next three spots with Tom Choplick (19:19), Bob Polcrack (19:33) and Jordan Beinlich (19:46).
Troy's Adam Gentilin was sixth in 20;16 followed by Sullivan's Liam Molyneux (20:17), Athens' Jeffrey Gao (20:35) and Troy duo Jordan Grimes (21:04) and Jacob Culkin (21:11).
Athens' Kyle Grady was 11th in 21:16 followed by Troy's Keegan Beard (21:20), Wildcats Michael Walter (21:24) and Sam Perri (21:24) with Griffin Tanner McCarty rounding out the top 15 in 21:49.
The Waverly girls took third at the Stocke-Conwicke Invitational on Saturday, winning the Small School title.
They had three runners in the top 10 and ended up with 76 points. Corning won with 35 while Union-Endicott was second with 68.
Kaylee Uhl was third to lead the Wolverines with a time of 21:23 while Kelsey Frank (21:43) was sixth and Breanna Featherson (22:31) was 10th.
Deanna Chandler (26:56) was 28th while teammate Katie Dibble (26:56) was 29th.
The boys finished seventh with 180 points, taking third in small school.
Collin Traub was 18th in 18:11 to lead Waverly while Randy Chandler (18:13) was 20th, Garrett Sutryk (19:03) was 58th, Hunter Bodine (21:16) was 50th, Brody Sprague (23:24) was 54th, Jared Vascoe (23:28) was 55th and Kacey Madigan (23:37) was 56th.
Waverly was seventh in the girls' modified with 258 points.
Katie O'Teng Bediako was 22nd in 13:33 for the Wolverines.
In the boys' modified race Waverly's Jared Stewart was 63rd in 12:51.
