Towanda boys, Athens girls earn victories

TOWANDA - The Black Knight boys and Wildcat girls earned wins in swimming action Tuesday. Towanda boys won 100-61 while the Athens girls won 95-85.

On the boys' side, a relay team of Seth Place, Preston Van Allen, Brandon Schuster and Kevin Jurnack earned a win for Towanda in the 200 medley with a time of 1:44.86. Jurnack then won the 200 free in 1:57.52, followed by teammates Roman Chernov and Jesse Olsen. Chernov qualified for districts in the event with a 2:10.62.

In the 200 I.M., Towanda's Van Allen won in 2:18.87 while Place was second with Athens' Cory Poklemba third. Schuster then won the 50 free in 23.99 with Athens' Scott Fisher second and Towanda's Justin Abma third.

Josh Daugherty of Athens won the diving with a personal best 227.65 points while Towanda's Tom Munkittrick was second.

In the 100 fly Chernov won with a 1:03.31, followed by teammate Kevin Brown while Athens' Brian Boswell was third. Athens went one-two in the 100 free with Sean Marshall taking first with a 54.11 while Fisher was second in 56.39. Schuster took third for the Knights.

The Black Knights swept the 500 free as Jurnack was first with a 5:56.32 followed by Mike Schultz and Munkittrick.

In the 200 free relay a Towanda team of Schuster, Van Allen, Brown and Jurnack won with a 1:37.06. Place then took the 100 back in 1:02.03 followed by teammate Trevor Standish while Athens' Marshall was third. Van Allen then won the breast in 1:02.61 followed by teammate Olsen and Athens' Kyle Pane.

Towanda then won the 400 free relay with a team of Dan Corbett, Place, Brown and Abma with a time of 4:05.85.

On the girls' side, an Athens team of Hannah Harvey-Sampson, Jessica Kopatz, Erica Rogers and Margo Woodring won the 200 medley relay in 2:05.57.

The Wildcats' Kalie Kander then won the 200 free in 2:21.24 while Towanda's Karen Esmus and Kaitlyn Howard were second and third.

Harvey-Sampson took first in the 200 I.M. at 2:21.57, followed by Towanda's Sarah Lamphere and Athens' Devon Welch in third. Welch then won the 50 free in 32.48, followed by Towanda's Sarah Place and Meredith Corbett.

Athens' Rogers won the diving with 199.60 points while Towanda's Catherine Morelli was second and Sarah Conklin third.

Woodring won the 100 fly in 1:17.59 while Brittany Engle of Towanda was second and Athens' Christina Pond third. Place won the 100 free for Towanda at 1:01.84, followed by Athens' Kopatz and Black Knight Corbett.

In the 500 free Athens' Kander was first with a time of 6:31.21 while Towanda's Howard was second and Wildcat Alex Liddane took third.

An Athens team of Harvey-Sampson, Kopatz, Emily Lane and Rogers won the 200 free relay in 1:55.26. A Black Knight team of Brielle Blanchard, Morgan Dreisch, Lamphere and Corbett broke the 2006 Towanda freshman record in the relay with a time of 2:02.41.

In the 100 back Lamphere won and broke the freshman record, which was held by Bethany Sims. Athens' Woodring was second and Dreisch was third.

Harvey-Sampson won the 100 breast in 1:13.25 while Towanda's Robin Holman was second and Conklin third.

In the 400 free relay an Athens team of Kander, Rogers, Lane and Welch won with a time of 4:27.6.

Blanchard, Dreisch, Lamphere and Corbett topped another Black Knight freshman record, though, with a 4:32.01.

"Our senior night turned out to be one of the best meets of the year," Towanda coach Mike Locke said. "Not only did we have an opportunity to honor our seniors and their parents, we also had a handful of PR's, district qualifications and freshman records. Despite being thrown in the pool, you couldn't have asked for a better meet."
