The Towanda Youth Football B Division finished their season with a perfect 7-0 record and a 21-6 victory in the championship game over Southern Tioga on Sunday. It was a long fun-filled season for the 38 players and 10 coaches with many highlights along the way.

The season began back in the hot days of early August with practice four nights a week. The coaches could see immediately that the team was loaded with talent. With only a few weeks before the first game, the coaches scrambled to find where the talents of each person would benefit the team the most.

They found they had a few players with the ability to catch and a few that could throw the football as well, which is pretty amazing considering these players are in the third and fourth grades (8 and 9 years old). Also, finding a great supply of naturally gifted running backs with great speed and agility and numerous players with good size to make a perfect line, the offense was set.

Then the coaches had to put together a defense. They found plenty of talent for that as well, using 11 totally different players than what they had for their offense. The defense was made up of athletic and very disciplined players that learned their jobs and did them well. Coaches told the players the only thing that can beat you is "yourselves."

A week before the games started it was time for a scrimmage against a team in the league: Canton. The teams traded offensive series', Towanda scoring touchdowns on seven of its first ten plays, of which five were pass plays. Offensively, Canton couldn't do much of anything against the tough Towanda defense.

Coaches were very pleased and anxious to start the season. The first game of the season was Southern Tioga at home. The players had a few first-game jitters, but settled down to roll to a 19-6 win. A week later they had to travel to Cowanesque where they opened up the air attack and scored 26 points in the first quarter on their way to a 45-20 victory. The next was a trip to Sayre on a rain-filled day where players battled the wet field and ball to squeak out a 12-6 win. After a hard week of practice the team was set to take on Troy at home. Again, with a big air attack to start out the game, Towanda opened a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and won 20-6. The next week was a rematch with Canton, Towanda winning 32-6. After a week off they traveled to Wyalusing, taking home a 25-14 victory. Setting up the rematch from week one with Southern Tioga in the Championship.

You are right. Canton couldn't do much against the tough Towanda defense in that scrimmage. Considering that Canton has all of 16 players TOTAL on their B team squad, and only had FOUR practices (yes, as in 4-2hour practices, which equals 8 hours of practice) and they also practice in a PASTURE next to a farm house, with no equipment except two tackling 'dummies' that have to be shared between the A, B, and C squads. No other equipment, at all.
Towanda is a very fortunate program to have the support of the community and school. Canton has about 20 parents that are trying to build a program with no support from the community or school.
So please, in the future, check the underlying factors involved. Towanda is a wealthy community that can afford to groom the athletes. Canton is an impoverished community that struggles to maintain a very small population.
Congratulations to the Towanda Youth Football Team. They were outstanding and play intense ball, very lucky youngsters. Just don't be bullies about it, please. Not all communities have the support you do.
