HUGHESVILLE - Mt. Carmel's Ali Varano struck 36 seconds into the overtime period to beat Troy 3-2 in District IV, Class A girls' soccer action Wednesday.
The Red Tornado opened the scoring six minutes into the game as Varano found the back of the net unassisted to put Mt. Carmel up 1-0.
At 13:51 Troy fired back as Kara Schucker scored off a Sara Hunsicker assist to knot the game up at 1-1, which would hold until halftime.
Just 2:50 into the second half the Trojans took the lead with Louisa Shedden scoring an unassisted goal.
That held until about 15 minutes left to play when Mt. Carmel's Sonya Grohowski scored to take the game into overtime at 2-2.
Mt. Carmel out shot Troy 19-11 and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Troy's Rachel Stafford made 16 saves on the night while Tornado keeper Isabella Stellar made nine stops.
