On June 15, the Troy Area School District Foundation held its eighth annual fundraising golf tournament at the Towanda Country Club.

It was a beautiful day for golf and 22 teams participated in the tournament under a most enjoyable and challenging format known as a "Florida Scramble".

Cindy Rathbun, a Troy High School graduate and Manager of the club did a wonderful job in providing lunch, a post-round dinner, and well-maintained facilities for the benefit of the golfers. Cindy and her staff are always welcoming, cordial, pleasant to work with. Ryan Van Noy, the Pro Shop Manager, who is also a Troy High School graduate, was accommodating and helpful in every way to enable an efficient, no waiting, tournament where the golf was finished in less than 4 1/2 hours.

Each participant in the tournament received a door prize.

Tim McClure and Jeff Appli were joint winners of the putting contest with each winning $95 and sharing a beautiful putting trophy contributed to the tournament by C & G Wilcox Engravings and Images of Towanda.

The long drive contest was won in the men's category by Joe Tomasso, in the women's category by Rebecca Stanfield, and in the senior's category by perennial winner and Towanda Country Club favorite Del Stamer. Rebecca, a principal at Troy schools was instrumental, along with other members of the Staff and Administration of Troy Area School District in preparing for arranging, and administering the tournament.

Jim Morse won the closest to the pin contest on hole number 16 with a distance of 19'2" and was awarded a trip to the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame donated by Wiggle Radio. Wiggle has been a longtime supporter of the Foundation and its golf tournament, and has provided a similar prize each year to one of the players.

The straightest drive on hole number 15 was won by Bernie Betke in the men's category and by Barb Zaleski in the women's category.

Jerry May won the closest to the pin contest on hole number 14 at 5'1". The hole was a 50-50 split of the amount paid by each golfer to participate and Jerry won $152 which he immediately and graciously donated to the Foundation.

A car was offered for a hole in one on hole number two with all participants having the advantage of hitting from the ladies tee. The hole-in-one sponsor also offered prizes for holes in one on two other holes. Unfortunately, there were no winners. Eighmey Buick, in Troy, put the car up as a prize and MC Insurance Company was the sponsor of the contest. Jerry May, a Principal in MC Insurance Company also played in the tournament, is a member of the golf tournament committee, and served with David Schucker as a Co-Chairman of the event.

The third flight was won by the team led by Dan Gilliland and sponsored by Vickery Funeral Home of Troy. Finishing second in the third flight was a team headed by Clyde Robbins, and Jim Topping with a score matching that of the Gilliland team but losing out to them on a match of cards. (Dan Gilliland; Greg Goldthwait; Brian Burchard; Al Nickerson) (Clyde Robbins; Jim Topping; Duane Haight; Ken Welch)

The second flight was won by team including Kevin Rimmey, Ryan Vowell, Nick Robertson and Neil Couch with a score of 153. Finishing second was the team of Jerry May, Rick Hoover, Lee Cummings, and Gary Cummings.
