Troy girls hold off Mansfield, 1-0
EAST TROY - The Troy girls soccer team got a goal from Louisa Shedden just 7:27 into the game off an assist from Brooke Mattocks and that's all they would need in a 1-0 victory over Mansfield on Wednesday.
Both teams had their chances in the second half. With just under 15 minutes to go Mansfield's Erin Dempsey had a shot hit off the cross bar, while the Trojans had a penalty shot with three minutes left, with Sara Hunsicker hitting the cross bar on the attempt.
Mansfield had 13 shots in the game and Troy had 11. Troy had six corner kicks and Mansfield finished with one corner kick.
Rachael Staford had 12 saves in the game and Kasey Powlison finished with four saves for the Tigers.
Wyalusing 9, Williamson 1
The Rams got six first-half goals on their way to the victory on Wednesday.
Kasey DeVoir started the scoring and Williamson then scored an own goal to make it 2-0. Wyalusing got a goal from Abby Borel off an assist from Paighton Martin and Martin then scored off a Borel assist.
Borel scored off assists by Martin and Kasey DeVoir and Morgan Doerner scored off an assist from Katie Prichard.
In the second half, Ciera Holland scored off an assist from Borel and Morgan Sutton scored her first varsity goal off assists from Kaci Woznicki and Kasey DeVoir.
Kierston Mayes scored for Williamson off a Jamie Cook assist and Wyalusing capped the scoring as Tiffany Newtwon scored.
Sarah Girven made two saves for Wyalusing for her first varsity win and Sam Herrington had 11 saves for Williamson.
Wyalusing had 20 shots and seven corners and Williamson had three shots and three corners.
Wyalusing won the JV game 1-0.
Wyalusing hosts Athens at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Athens 5, Wellsboro 0
The Wildcats led just 1-0 at the half, but four second-half goals lifted them to the win as they stayed unbeaten in NTL play on Wednesday.
Kirsten Colegrove got Athens on the board at 32:39 of the first half as she found the net.
At 34:06 of the second half, Colegrove scored again as she fired a shot to the top of the post and at 26:51 Taylor Conrad scored to make it 3-0. Mackenzie Warner made it 4-0 at 17:01 as she headed in a cross from Colegrove and at 7:44 Colegrove cut through the defense to complete her hat trick.
"The Lady Hornets did a wonderful job marking the ball and putting pressure on the skilled Athens attack in the first half," Wellsboro coach Carolyn Mitchell said. "Athens' Colegrove is a standout player with excellent ball skills and well deserved goals. We had a couple of breakdowns defensively in the second half, but were able to learn from them.
"Although we didn't come away from this game with a win, the girls commented that we are working better together and it shows on the field. We have some things we are going to really key in on at practice to finish this season strong. Overall, I'm proud of the girls ambition to give their all right up until the end."
Athens had 15 shots and six corners, and three direct kicks, and Wellsboro had five shots and two corners, and three direct kicks. Morgan Westbrook had five saves for Athens and Megahn Bodine had seven for Wellsboro, while Sarah Ingerick had two saves for Wellsboro.
The Green Hornets won the JV game 5-0.
