TROY - Things haven't gone exactly as planned for the Canton Warriors this year.
Injuries and late losses have cost Canton at times, but on Friday night they ended the year just the way they started it, with a victory.
The Warriors used a strong defensive effort to pound out a 22-0 victory over the rival Troy Trojans in the annual Old Shoe Game.
"Despite a loss last week to Blossburg, the kids played the best they have all season in these last two games," Canton coach Miller Moyer Jr. said. "They played hard and played their hearts out all season. It is a fine line from us being a 9-1 team and a 5-5 team. It is a game of inches and it is hard when you play well, but sometimes just run out of steam at the end."
That wasn't the case in this game as the Warriors turned a scoreless game through three quarters into a convincing win as they scored three times in the fourth quarter.
Billy Sourbeer started things in the fourth quarter when he hauled in a 44-yard touchdown from Ben Pepper to make it a 6-0 Canton lead after the extra point failed.
Sourbeer started Canton's next drive with a 72-yard run to the one-yard line and Pepper ran it in from there on a quarterback sneak.
The two-point try failed, but after a penalty the Warriors punched in the try to make it 14-0.
Canton capped the scoring as Pepper ran in from three yards out and the two-point try was good to make it a 22-0 final.
"It is a tough loss," Troy coach Kevin Schucker said. "We had a good season, our kids give consistent and all-out effort. Tonight we were simply outplayed on the interior defensive and offensive lines. That made the difference. We are just waiting to hear what the rest of the season holds."
Despite the loss the Trojans are likely headed to Towanda for a matchup with the Black Knights in the District 4, Class AA playoffs next weekend.
Towanda is the top seed and undefeated at 10-0. The Black Knights beat Wyalusing 31-0 Friday and the Rams were seeded ninth in districts entering Friday and Mt. Carmel, seeded 10th entering the day, fell to North Schuylkill 27-7.
Canton finishes the regular season 5-5 and will likely be headed to the Eastern Conference playoffs next week.
Sourbeer led all players with 136 yards rushing on 16 carries and Corey Lee added 41 yards on 10 carries.
Pepper was 5-for-10 passing for 72 yards and Jordan Campbell had three catches for 18 yards, while Corey Peterson caught two balls for 10 yards and Sourbeer had the 44-yard catch.
Pepper also intercepted a pass in the game.
The Warriors held Troy to just 59 yards rushing and 71 total yards in the game.
Cortney Bennett gained 27 yards on seven carries and Matt Oldroyd had 24 yards on 13 carries.
