Waverly clinches Division title with win over Newark Valley
The Wolverines jumped out early in their 75-31 win over Newark Valley in IAC boys' basketball action Tuesday. The win clinches the IAC South Division I title for Waverly, their second in as many years.
Ryan Hewitt had 21 points and seven boards to lead the Wolverines while Andrew McIntyre pumped in a career high 16.
Chris Raupers added 14 with eight boards while Dylan Perry scored 10. Nick Zwierlein had six points, 10 assists and four steals, while Nick Jilson and Evan Van de Wall had four points each. Ryan McFarland added seven boards for the Wolverines.
Adrian Race led Newark Valley with eight points.
This game was Waverly first since their loss to Notre Dame last week.
"We didn't play all that well at Notre Dame," Waverly coach Lou Judson said. "We got back to work in practice, we worked on things we didn't do in the Notre Dame game. We did them well tonight. We have not been playing well in the first half of games, we played a very good first half tonight."
One thing that stood out was their rebounding.
"We had 50 rebounds as a team," he remarked. "By far more than any game this year."
Regardless of the win, Waverly has bigger things in mind.
"We're not content with a division title," explained Judson. "We're very happy with where were at but were not content with where were at."
Waverly won the JV game 51-32 behind 15 from Peyton Miller and 11 from Matt Brown.
The Wolverines will either face Whitney Point or Dryden for the overall IAC title on Friday, Feb. 17 at Tompkins Community College.
Tioga 59, Odessa-Montour 38
After jumping out to a 17-8 first quarter lead, the Tigers extended it to 30-13 at the half to pick up the IAC win in boys' basketball action Tuesday.
Eric Zwierlein led Tioga with 19 points while Cody Bennett added 13 and Troy Rogers netted 11. Zach Williams scored seven, Sean Whitney had five while Dalton Wojcuich and Dylan Brink chipped in with two points each.
Odessa was led by Matt Kauto's 11.
Notre Dame 50, Watkins Glen 32
The Crusader's avenged an early season loss on senior night in IAC boys' basketball action Tuesday.
Down 9-7 after the first quarter Notre Dame out scored Watkins Glen 43-23 over the final three quarters.
Gillett resident Shane Manning had 21 points, five assists, two steals, a block and three rebounds to lead the Crusaders.
"He played very, very well," Notre Dame coach Bill Hopkins said. "He played like a senior tonight."
Darius Garvin added eight points for the Crusaders while Bryan Brown scored seven. Tom Agan added five with five steals while Matt Davis had four with eight rebounds. Derek Marshall netted three while Wyatt Martin chipped in with two.
Clayton Beaumont led Watkins with 12 points while Josh Teeter had 10.
Notre Dame will travel to Watkins Glen Friday.
Girls
WAVERLY, N.Y. - The Wolverines celebrated their lone senior, Cassidy Farr, with an 81-26 IAC win over Newark Valley Tuesday.
Reylynn Schwartzhoff led Waverly with 25 points while Sabrina Bowman had 18 with nine steals and seven assists for the near triple double.
Victoria Cron added 13 with seven rebounds while Emily Walker had 10. Farr scored nine, Jenna Bowman added four while Emiley Myers netted two.
Jenna Bowman also had four rebounds, four steals and four assists.
Nicole Weeks led Newark with 10 points.
Waverly won the JV game 62-22 behind 20 from McKhenna Mattison and 13 from Jordan Raupers.
Waverly is at Edison Friday.
Tioga 39, Odessa-Montour 37
The Tigers used a big second half to edge Odessa in IAC girls' basketball action Tuesday.
Odessa led 22-14 at the half but a 25-15 second half in favor of the Tigers propelled them to victory.
Sierra Beebe led Tioga with 14 points and seven boards while Hannah Manwaring added six. Sarah Whitney, Emily Schweiger and Callie Patsellis had five points each, with Schweiger adding 12 boards and five steals. Whitney also had four assists.
Natalie Burns had two points and seven rebounds while Maddie Tinney added two as well.
Taylor Carrie had 22 to lead Odessa.
Tioga won the JV game 42-13 behind 15 from Rachael Graham.
The Tigers host SVE Friday.
