Waverly Legion tops Waverly VFW in rec ball
EAST WAVERLY, N.Y. - Brendyn Stillman pitched four innings of no-hit relief and also manufactured the winning run in the eighth inning to lift the Waverly Legion to a 4-3 win over the Waverly VFW in the semifinals of the Waverly Rec. Summer Baseball League here Tuesday afternoon.
The Legion will face S-VE Thursday at 6 p.m. in the championship game.
The VFW took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a groundball off the bat of Dylan Cooney to score Mike Shaffer, who led off with a single and stole second and third, and an RBI single by Mason Salsman.
The Legion broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. After a pair of errors resulted in the first run, Jacob Ovedovitz worked a bases-loaded walk to tie the game.
The VFW regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Peyton Miller led off with a single, stole second and ended up scoring on consecutive wild pitches.
The Legion tied the game in the sixth inning when Gavin Bennett worked a lead-off walk, stole second and scored on a Jason Morales single.
After returning the VFW in order in the top of the eighth inning, Stillman led off the home half with a single and stole second, then scored when the catcher's throw on his steal of third sailed into left field.
Stillman struck out 11 and walked one to pick up the win in relief of Bennett, who allowed three runs - two earned - on four hits, while striking out six and walking seven.
Jason Morales singled twice and stole two bases and Stillman singled, scored twice and stole four bases to lead the VFW at the plate, while Bennett scored a pair of runs, Nate Bennett singled and Ovedovitz had an RBI.
Zack VanHouten, Mike Shaffer and Dylan Cooney each singled and stole two bases to lead the Legion's offense, while Mason Salsman singled and drove in a run and Miller singled, scored a run and stole two bases.
Matt VanHouten singled in the loss and Cole Jenner scored a run.
Salsman was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs - one earned - on three hits. He struck out six and walked four.
Shaffer pitched 3-plus innings and allowed two runs - none earned - on one hit and three walks.
Sayre 9, Towanda 4
SAYRE - Sayre built a 9-0 lead en route to a 9-4 rain-plagued four-inning win over Towanda here Tuesday in pool play action in the Athens 7- & 8-year-old baseball tournament.
Sayre led 6-0 in the third inning when rain halted play Monday. The rain struck again Tuesday and played was stopped after the fourth inning - making it an official game.
Sayre took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, then scored five runs in the second for a 6-0 lead. They stretched the lead to 9-0 in the top of the fourth.
John Apgar and Kaden Bennett each singled and scored a run to lead Sayre at the plate, while Thomas Morley scored a pair of runs and Bralon Slater, Gabe Horton, Kaiden Hyjek, Nathan Smith and Nick Pellicano each scored a run.
Sayre takes on Athens, also 1-0 in pool play, Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Athens Little League field.
