Notre Dame got a second-place finish from Carl Shen in the long jump and placed in four girls events at the Southern Tier Invitational at Cornell University on Saturday, while Waverly had a third-place finish and placed in four events.

Kaylee Uhl took third in the 600 for Waverly in 1:43.53 with teammate Sam Goble taking 10th in 1:49.04.

Liia Carpenter finished ninth in 7.77 in the 55 and Carpenter, Uhl, Lea McMahon and Goble finished fifth in the 1600 relay in 4:19.64.

Shen had a jump of 21-feet, 2 1/2-inches for the Crusaders and on the girls side Sayre's Mary Pelkowski was fifth in the 600 in 1:44.18.

Brittany Schutrum finished fourth in the 55 in 7.61 and sixth in the 300 in 43.48 and Pelkowski, Schutrum, Victoria Schutrum and Debroah Diarra finished fourth in the 800 relay in 1:53.42.

"Other than just having schools from all over the state, it was a good way to get us back in the groove and we needed that," Waverly coach Scott Baird said.

Both teams are at a combined age group meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cornell.
