Waverly's Brian Miller earns 200th win; Tioga still undefeated
Waverly's girls' coach Brian Miller earned his 200th career win in the Wolverines 49-46 victory over Candor Tuesday.
"It feels good," Miller said. "A lot of good players contributed to that. It's quite an accomplishment for my program."
It wasn't easy for Waverly, though.
They were down 24-15 at the half but fought back in the second half to take the win.
Kelly Lyon had six points, 15 boards, and seven steals while Molly Walker had 19 points, five boards and Megan Sutryk had 19 points, seven boards, three steals and three assists.
Also for Waverly, Christine Talenti and Cassidy Farr had two points while Mattie Van de Wall scored one.
"We had a good second half," Miller said. "We scored 34 points compared to 15 in the first. We played with a little more sense of urgency."
In the JV game, Waverly won 69-17 with Emily Walker scoring 17 for the Wolverines.
Waverly will play next on Tuesday at home against Watkins Glen.
Tioga 52, Notre Dame 45
The Tigers escaped with a win on Tuesday.
"It was a lot closer than it looks," Tioga coach Joe Robinson said. "The score was tied with 3-and-a-half minutes to go."
From there, Kara McDuffee gave Tioga the lead on a foul shot, followed by an Ally Richter lay-up. Down the stretch the Tigers hit their free throws as Kaci Hoyt went 4-for-4 and Richter made one.
"It was a close game," Robinson said. "Just a battle."
McDuffee had another strong night with 28 points, eight boards, two steals and three assists. Also for the Tigers, Richter had eight rebounds, five of which were offensive, to go with seven points.
Chipping in for the Tigers were Hoyt with nine points, Marissa Miller with four and Callie Patsellis with four. Erin Eckstrom also pulled down seven rebounds.
Tioga won the JV game 37-26 as Natalie Burns and Hannah Manwearing both had eight points.
Tioga will be at Elmira Heights with a 6 p.m. JV start next Friday.
