WAVERLY, N.Y. - The Wolverines had 16 different swimmers qualify for the Section IV finals this weekend after the Class C preliminaries Wednesday.

They also had a new pool record set as John Hallett's 50 free time of 22.21 surpassed former teammate Jeff Mastrantuono's time of 22.37. It was 1/100th of a second shy of the school record of 22.20 set by Pat Fell.

Hallett was also the top qualifier in the event.

In the 200 free, Wolverine Mike Girolamo was sixth in at 2:09.63 while teammate Jared Stewart also qualified with a time of 2:23.49.

Waverly's Josh Mastrantuono was third in the 200 IM at 2:13.59 to qualify while teammate Tanner Burt took seventh in 2:27.28.

Hallett's teammates Fred Miller (26.38) and Brandon Anderson (26.61) also made the top 16 in the 50 free, taking 14th and 15th overall.

Waverly's Brighton Wood was sixth in the 100 fly at 1:02.16 while Brandon Whitley (1:07.78) took ninth and Anderson (1:09.19) was 11th.

Hallett returned to take second in the 100 free at 49.77 while teammate Caleb Jenkins was sixth in 56.78. Kendrick Wood (59.25) and Miller (59.60) also qualified, taking 14th and 15th.

Whitley was Waverly's top qualifier in the 500, taking eighth in 6:03.05. Gary Moorehead (6:03.65) was ninth, Girolamo (5:58.32) was 10th and Jon Casterline (7:14.86) took the last spot, 16th, to round out the Wolverine qualifiers in the 500.

Jenkins was 11th in the backstroke at 1:11.18 while Casterline took 15th in 1:20.33 to qualify.

Mastrantuono led a Waverly sweep in the 100 breaststroke, taking the top time in 1:02.73. Wood was second in 1:03.96 while Burt took third in 1:08.26. Wood's time is good enough for fourth overall at Waverly.

Lucas Beardsley also qualified in the event for Waverly with a time of 1;23.78, good enough for 14th.

All three relays also made the cut.

In the 200 yard medley relay, Waverly's team took second in 1:52.49 and their 200 free relay took seventh in 1:46.11.

The Wolverines finished the day taking fifth in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:55.27.

The qualifiers will swim in the finals at Owego High School with a 1 p.m. start Saturday.
