Waverly swims past Athens
The Waverly swim team defeated Athens 125-59 Friday night as the Wolverines were led by team captains Josh Mastrantuono and John Hallett as they each picked up four wins on the night.
They teamed with Tanner Burt and Caleb Jenkins to win the medley relay and then teamed with Jenkins and Mike Girolamo to win the 400 free relay in (3:48.18). Mastrantuono's individual wins came in the 200 free (2;03.81) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.43) while Hallet picked up individual wins in the 50 (23.41) and 100 freestyles (52.35). Waverly won all three relays as Burt and Girolamo teamed with Kendrick Wood and Brandon Whitley to win the 200 free relay (1:53.53). Brandon Whitley earned his first individual varsity win in the 500 free (6:15.74) and Nick Peterson remained undefeated in diving for the year, amassing 161.25 points.
Burt took second in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke, Caleb Jenkins was second in the 50 free and 100 free, Brody Sprague in diving and Gary Moorehead was second in the 100 backstroke.
Taking third places were Girolamo in the 200 free, Ken Wood in the 100 free and John Casterline in the 500 free and the 100 backstroke.
Frank Chen won the 100 backstroke (56.42) and 100 fly (53.54) for Athens and established a new pool record in the butterfly to erase the mark of :54.71 set last year by Chenango Valleys Kurt Grunder. Athens' other win came in the 200 IM by Tyler Solomon at 2:26.34.
Bryan Solomon was second in the 200 free and the 100 fly while Austin Dukes took second in the 500 free.
Taking third were Dukes (200 IM), Kurt Walck (50 free), Zach Firestine (diving) and Tyler Solomon (100 breaststroke).
Waverly will host Southern Cayuga next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
