Waverly ties record with win over Watkins Glen
WAVERLY, N.Y. - The Wolverines accomplished many things with their 56-35 win over Watkins Glen in IAC boys' basketball action Friday.
They tied a school record and also tightened their grip on the division lead.
They tied the most consecutive home wins with 16 and with the win now have a two game lead over Notre Dame in the South standings with three games left.
"It was a big win for us on many levels," Waverly coach Lou Judson remarked.
The Wolverines started out quick, taking a 7-0 lead right off the bat but the Senecas rallied to cut it to 16-9 after the opening quarter. By the half Waverly's lead was down to one.
"We didn't play well in the first half," Judson explained. "We struggled defensively."
That all changed in the second half as the Wolverines held Watkins Glen to 10 total points.
"We came out and played excellent defense. It was a good effort on our part, I'm proud of the way our kids handled themselves in the second half."
Ryan Hewitt had 19 points and four steals to lead Waverly while Nick Zwierlein added 16 points and six assists.
Evan Van de Wall and Chris Raupers added seven points each, with Raupers grabbing eight boards and Van de Wall picking up seven.
Andrew McIntyre added five points while Nick Jilson scored two.
Clayton Bumont led Watkins Glen with 12.
Waverly has three games left, facing Tioga at home on Tuesday. That follows with road games at Notre Dame and Newark Valley to finish out the season.
Watkins Glen won the JV game 57-31. Peyton Miller and Colton Miller had nine points each for the Wolverines.
Mansfield 56, Canton 47
The Warriors jumped out to a first quarter lead but the Tigers rallied over the next three for an NTL boys' basketball cross-over win Friday.
Canton led 14-7 after one but Mansfield scored 22 in the second quarter to take a 29-28 lead at the half. The Tigers then out scored Canton 27-19 in the second half.
Alec Simpson led Mansfield with 21 points and seven boards while Marquis Delgado added 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Taylor Hillson netted eight, Reece Correll scored seven while adding seven boards and four blocks. Sam Rotella added three points for the Tigers and six rebounds.
Emmett Watson added 15 points while Ryan Ball and Jesse Lattimer had eight points each. Wes Moore netted seven, Eddie Larcom had six and Tim Bassett scored three.
Mansfield won the JV game 49-39 behind 11 points from both Bo Burleigh and Brady Andrews.
The Tigers host Northeast Bradford Monday.
Notre Dame 91, Newark Valley 43
The Crusaders had 22 assists as a team in their IAC boys' basketball win Friday. Notre Dame went up 29-10 in the first quarter and never looked back.
Matt Davis led the Crusaders with 16 points, eight boards, three assists and two blocks while Shane Manning, a Gillett resident, added 15 points, five boards, five assists and two blocks.
Brian Brown netted 14 with four assists while Darius Garvin added 10. Colin White and Derek Marshall had eight points a piece with White handing out four assists.
Wyatt Martin added five, Sean Brown scored three while Riley Leonard added two.
Ryan Coleman led Newark Valley with eight while Adrian Race and Blake Novi scoring seven points apiece.
Notre Dame won the JV game.
The Crusaders will host Newfield Tuesday.
