WAVERLY, N.Y. - Waverly built a big lead and held off of a late rally in an 11-7 win over Elmira Heights Monday evening in action here at the Frank Bottone 10U baseball tournament.

After trading runs in the first inning, Waverly took control in the second inning with five runs on consecutive run-scoring singles by Nick Van Houten, Brady Blauvelt, Brennan Traub and Scott Woodring.

Waverly tacked on a run in the fourth inning on consecutive singles by VanHouten, Blauvelt and Traub to take a 7-2 lead.

Joey Buffone led off the top of the fifth inning with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out off the bat of Caden Granger.

Waverly stretched its lead to 11-2 in the top of the sixth inning. Traub and Woodring opened the frame with back-to-back doubles.

After Woodring advanced to third on a single by Collin Wright, both runners scored on a two-out single by Granger to cap the rally.

Elmira Heights made it interesting in the home of the sixth inning with five runs to pull within 11-7.

Woodring doubled twice, singled and scored a run and Traub doubled and singled twice and scored two runs to lead Waverly at the plate, while VanHouten and Blauvelt both singled twice and scored two runs.

Buffone doubled and scored a run for the winners and Collin Wright and Granger each singled and scored a run and Caden Wheeler scored a run

Grangers pitched 5-plus innings to pick up the win for Waverly. He allowed struck out four and walked three and allowed just two runs on four hits in the first five innings before tiring.

Traub relieved in the sixth inning and allowed a run on a hit, while striking out one and walking one.

Waverly is back in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. when it takes on Huck Finn in winner's bracket action.
