Wellsboro defeats North Penn, finishes at .500
WELLSBORO - The Green Hornets finished the season at .500 after a 24-13 victory over North Penn in their rivalry game on Friday night.
Wellsboro struck first at 5:17 of the first quarter as Jermaine Brooks scored on a 15-yard run to put the Green Hornets up 6-0 after the two-point try failed.
North Penn answered back with 16 seconds left in the half as Ryan Bogaczyk scored on a two-yard run. The extra point failed and it was 6-6 after one.
In the second quarter at 7:04 Brooks scored again, this time from a yard out and it was 12-6 Wellsboro after the two-point run failed.
North Penn answered right back again, as Derrick Burd scored on a six-yard run with 3:10 left in the half and the extra point was good as North Penn took their first lead at 14-13.
The Panthers held the lead into the fourth quarter when Kyler Widows recovered a blocked punt by Thomas Straniere in the end zone with 7:55 left in the game. The two-point pass failed, but Wellsboro led 18-13.
Wellsboro capped the win with 4:36 left when Brooks scored on a four-yard run.
Wellsboro got 191 yards rushing from Brooks, who had three touchdowns, while Mike Pietropola was 9-for-17 passing for 57 yards. Pietropola also ran for 51 yards on 11 carries.
Ben Shaw had four catches for 23 yards and Konnor Spencer had three grabs for 18 yards.
Kieron Smethers and Dan Saniga each had a catch in the game.
Taylor Hillson was 5-for-18 passing for 55 yards for North Penn.
Burd ran for 29 yards on seven carries and Hillson had 29 yards on 12 carries, while Bogaczyk had 17 yards on six carries.
Sam Rotella had two catches for 23 yards in the game and Burd, Devin Remley and Caleb Potter each had a catch in the game.
North Penn finishes the season at 4-6.
