Wellsboro tops Williamson, pulls even in NTL West lead
Wellsboro pulled even for the NTL West girls' basketball lead by beating Williamson 41-26 Thursday.
The win puts Williamson and Wellsboro at the top of the standings at 3-1 with Mansfield in third at 3-2.
The Hornets led 9-6 after the opening quarter but Williamson hung tough, holding the deficit to three points at the half.
Wellsboro then out scored them 26-14 in the second half to pull out the win.
Makenzie Marple led the Hornets with 15 points while Kim Acorn netted 12. Hannah Zuchowski added eight points while Sarah Ingerick, Jada Jackson and Jordan Butters rounded out the scoring with two points a piece.
Lori Horton led Williamson with 12 points while Kim Daugherty added eight. Jenna Hugic added four while Danielle Cross netted two.
Wyalusing 45, Towanda 31
The Rams jumped out early and finished strong to pick up the NTL East girls' basketball win Thursday.
Wyalusing led 18-6 after the first quarter but Towanda cut it to four points by half with a 12-4 run in the second.
The Knights hung tough in the third quarter as Wyalusing led 30-25 going into the fourth where they out scored Towanda 15-6 to secure the win.
Kasey DeVoir had 16 points and five boards to lead the Rams while MacKenzie Martin added 14. Paighton Martin chipped in with five points and three steals while Savannah Schools and Arielle Kneller had four points a piece. Kneller added 15 rebounds while Schools had five boards.
Roni Morrison rounded out the scorers with two while grabbing three boards.
Kaitlin Hallabuk had a double-double of 10 points and 15 boards for Towanda while Alaina Wickwire had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Alysha Grimes netted seven points while Danielle Zatkos and Laciann Manning had two points each.
Wyalusing won the JV game 35-24 behind 19 from Brook Force. Kayla Grimes led Towanda with 11.
The Rams will host Tioga on Saturday with a noon start.
Mansfield 59, Cowanesque Valley 38
The Tigers pulled away from a pesky CV squad to pick up an NTL East girls' basketball win Thursday.
Mansfield led 13-12 after the opening quarter then pushed the lead out to 32-21 at the half. Then they out scored the Indians 27-17 in the second half to secure the win.
Molly Wood had 17 points and seven boards to lead Mansfield while Maddie York added 12. Emily James netted 11 while Jackie Hillson had nine points, four assists and six steals.
Ali Hillson scored eight while Simone Lichty rounded out the offense with two points.
Hayley Painter's 13 points led CV while Grace Earle netted 12. Amanda Painter scored six, Courtney Schauer netted five while Blair Williams added two.
Mansfield won the JV game.
The Tigers welcome North Penn next Thursday.
North Penn 48, Troy 30
The Panthers held Troy to five first half points as they picked up an NTL cross-over girls' basketball win Thursday.
Kaitlyn Garverick had a double-double of 10 points and 18 boards for North Penn while Mariah Berguson added 17 points and eight steals.
Kirsten Berguson netted eight points, Whitney Holdren had five, Alex Mendez scored three, Meredith Kline and Britta Berguson had two points each while Alyssa Strausser added one.
Vanessa Benson led Troy with 14 points while Taylor Johnston and Faith Ceeley had five points each. Brooke Mattocks netted four while Kristyn Kinner rounded out the scoring with two.
North Penn won the JV game 31-26. Britta Berguson had 19 for the Panthers while Brooke Losey-Root led Troy with 10.
The Panthers will travel to Williamson next Tuesday.
Sayre 62, Canton 12
Mollie Robinson had a triple-double to lead the Redskins to the NTL East win in girls' basketball action Thursday.
Robinson had 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists while picking up five steals in the win. Teammate Kelly Villanti led all scorers with 17 while Adrienne Malorzo and Elyse Skerpon had eight points each.
Villanti and Skerpon had five steals each while Malorzo added four blocks.
Kelsey Young chipped in with six points while Paige Wampole had five points, eight boards and three blocks. Cheyanna Roberts rounded out the Redskin scoring with two points.
Makenzy Route led Canton with five points while Lyzzy Tymeson netted three. Chelsey Heatley and Abby Herman had two points a piece.
Sayre won the JV game 39-9 as Roberts had 12 points while Wampole and Angeles James had eight points each.
