Wendy's Wonderful Kids Half Marathon and 10K Run through Wilkes-Barre to Benefit Program Finding Adoptive Families for Children in Foster Care
Registration is open for the Wendy's Wonderful Kids Half Marathon and 10K Run to be held Saturday, Sept. 4, at the River Commons Park and throughout downtown Wilkes-Barre. Proceeds will support the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption's local Wendy's Wonderful Kids program at the Children's Service Center of Wyoming Valley.
Wendy's Wonderful Kids, a signature program of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, is making a difference for thousands of children - one child at a time. The Foundation awards grants to public and private adoption agencies to hire adoption professionals who execute aggressive, child-focused recruitment programs targeted exclusively on moving children from foster care into adoptive families. More than 120 Wendy's Wonderful Kids recruiters are working for children in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The Wilkes-Barre program has served 53 children and matched 37 of them with potential adoptive parents. So far, 15 of the community's most vulnerable children have been adopted into loving, permanent families as a result of the Wendy's Wonderful Kids program.
"We are so grateful to Wilkes-Barre Racing and the local Wendy's restaurants for organizing and promoting this amazing event, and for believing that every child deserves a family," says Rita Soronen, executive director of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.
The race course is a flat, fast and shaded two loop circuit through historic and residential communities, Wilkes University, and Kings College. Live music on the course and at the start/finish line will make for a unique and energizing racing experience. The race field will be limited to 1,800 runners. Registration is $35 for the half marathon and $25 for the 10K and is available online at www.wilkesbarreracing.com.
The event is unusually spectator-friendly. Racers will pass within a block of the Sneaker King start/finish line three times during the half marathon and twice during the 10K. During and after the race, family and friends can: enjoy the Sundance Vacations Family Activity Zone at the River Commons Park; take a raft rip down the Susquehanna River; have a free pancake breakfast in downtown; participate in children's activities near the start/finish line; check out the health food vendors at Public Square; enjoy inspirational music at the 3:16 Athletic Wear Concert Stage; stay the afternoon to watch the Blue Cross Criterium and state championship cycling through the heart of downtown Wilkes-Barre
Those who prefer shorter distances can run one mile under the stars in the Wet Paint Main Street Mile. The Mile also benefits Wendy's Wonderful Kids and starts and ends in front of the crowd on South Main Street. High school students can raise money for adoption and their school through the Bonner Chevrolet High School Challenge. Bonner will donate $500 to the athletic department of the high school that has the greatest number of students in the Main Street Mile. Registration for all races is available online at www.wilkesbarreracing.com.
