Towanda First Friday -- Harvest
Cindy Wood, of Dry Goods Plus, explained that this month’s theme celebrates the harvest. "It’s to thank all the farmers in the area for the produce they harvest," Wood explained. Part of the celebration included a baking contest, in which the public was invited to judge items baked by the contestants. The only criteria, Wood said, was that the submission had to include apples, in connection with the harvest theme. Those wishing to judge paid $1, and then sampled each of the submissions — which included apple dumplings, apple pie, and apple cake. Participants then submitted which item they liked the best. Wood said the money raised from the contest would be used to buy gift certificates for the winners — with $50 percent of the money going to the first-place winner, 30 percent to the second-place winner, and 20 percent going to third-place. Up and down Main Street in Towanda were harvest themes — including pumpkins, apples and apple cider. Some people were even dressed as scarecrows as part of the festivities.
